Abington Falls to Penn College in United East Tournament

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team saw its season come to an end after falling to Penn College, 9-1, in the United East Tournament on Sunday morning at Elm Park.  The format changed to single elimination after the recent weather delayed the start of the championship which was originally scheduled to begin on Friday.

How It Happened
 
* Penn College jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Jordan Specht in the bottom of the first inning.  The Wildcats added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second after back-to-back run scoring hits by Maddie Hurst and Olivia Hemstock.  Another two runs in the third inning gave the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.
 
* Abington broke through in the fourth when junior Megan Tomoney scored on a base hit by fellow junior Jenna Gorman to make the score 5-1.
 
* The Wildcats countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth and went on to score again in the bottom of the fifth.  Penn College went on to score two runs in the sixth with Ivvy Morder recording the walk-off hit as the eight-run mercy rule was put into effect. 
 
Inside the Box Score

* Gorman finished 1-for-2 with the team's lone RBI. 
 
* The Nittany Lions also received hits from freshmen Drew Liss and Gretchen Yanss who both finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate.
 
* For Penn College, Hemstock finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while Jordan Specht went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.  Mackenzie Weaver also drove in a pair of runs.  Kyla Benner (14-5) earned the win for the Wildcats as she struck out 11 batters in a complete six inning game.  
 
Milestone Season
Abington finishes the 2022 campaign with a 24-15 overall record.  The 24 victories mark the most in the program's Division III era which began in 2011.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 13th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2017 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-11 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were appearing in their ninth United East Tournament (formerly the NEAC).  The team has qualified for the postseason every year since the 2013 with the exception of the 2020 season when the tournament was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-15 in the United East/NEAC tournament.
