Abington Edged by Neumann in Season Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer fell to Neumann University in the team's season opener by the score of 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Field.

How It Happened
 
* Neumann's Chimdi Ekwem scored the game's first goal late in the first half to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.  Ekwem scored off a cross pass from Javier Mejia.
 
* Abington tied the game in the 66th minute when sophomore Arsene Bado fired home a rebounded ball for his first goal of the season.  Sophomore Roan Vadakan made an initial shot which was stopped by goalkeeper Seth Walker. 
 
* Later in the half, the Knights regained the lead in the 75th minute when Daniel Decker scored off a loose ball after a save by Abington's Matt Sheldon.
 
* Minutes later Sheldon came up big for the Nittany Lions in the 80th minute as he made a tremendous save on a penalty kick attempt by Neumann's Chris Siemien.
 
* In the final minute, Abington had a penalty kick opportunity to potentially tie the game, but the PK attempt went just over the top of the goal off target.

* In the second half, totaled nine shots after only two in the first 45 minutes.  Five of the team's nine second half shots were on-target.
 
* Abington held the advantage on corners by an 8-3 margin totaling four corner kick attempts in each half.
 
* Bado's first half goal was his first career score, while Vadakan, who was credited with the assist, registered his first career helper.
 
* Sheldon finished the game with three saves for the Nittany Lions.

Today marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Neumann dating back to the 2017 season. The Nittany Lions are now 1-4-0 versus the Knights in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 as the Nittany Lions host Ursinus College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Memorial Field.
