Abington Clinches Third Seed in Upcoming United East Tournament with Victory at Harrisburg

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team officially clinched the third seed in the upcoming United East Tournament after defeating Penn State Harrisburg, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.  Abington concludes conference play with a 3-3 record, while Harrisburg falls to 2-3 with one conference match left on its schedule.  Abington fell short to Alvernia University, 3-0, in part of a tri-match at Harrisburg.

How It Happened vs. Harrisburg
 
* Back-to-back kills by sophomore Laine Kulpinski and freshman Jayla Hickey followed by a pair of aces from Kulpinski fueld Abington's opening run to an 8-2 advantage.  Abington controlled the set from beginning to end and led by as many as 11 points after an ace by sophomore Brianna Brozo made the score 17-6. The Nittany Lions took the opening set, 25-17.
 
* In the second set, Abington built a seven-point lead at 13-6 but Harrisburg came soaring back to eventually take the lead with a slight 19-18 advantage.  Both teams battled back-and-forth down the stretch with chances to clinch the set on multiple occasions.  Abington made the final strike in the set while trailing 29-28.  Freshman Kaya Mason connected on a kill to tie the set and the Nittany Lions took advantage of a Harrisburg attack error to lead 30-29.  Mason then followed with another kill to clinch the set at 31-29 to give Abington a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
* Harrisburg spoiled Abington's shutout bid with a 25-21 victory in set three.  Abington responded with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to take the match, 3-1.  Abington broke a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 run to regain the lead, this time for good.  Harrisburg cut the deficit down to 21-19 but Abington scored the final four points.  Brozo recorded two straight aces to close out the set after a pair of Harrisburg errors gave Abington two points.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Harrisburg
 
* Brozo record double-digit kills to lead Abington with a match-high 11 to go along with four aces and seven assists.
 
* Sophomore Sara Schrader set a career-high in digs in her second straight match with 24. 
 
* Kulpinski finished with 35 assists marking the third time in the last four matches she recorded 30-plus assists.  She also had eight digs.
 
* Freshman Brynn Atkins totaled six kills and had four total blocks (1BS/3BA).
 
* For Harrisburg, Amoi Willis totaled 10 kills, while Tori Henderson and Julia Choe each recorded 16 digs.
 
How It Happened vs. Alvernia
 
* Alvernia halted Abington's four-match winning streak with a 3-0 over the Nittany Lions in a non-conference match.  The Golden Wolves recorded three double-digit victories in the match.
 
* The Golden Wolves limited the Abington offense to a season-low 14 kills, while recording 41 on the their offensive side.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Alvernia
 
* Hickey finished with a team-high six kills.
 
* Schrader totaled 14 digs as she totaled a combined 38 digs between the two matches.
 
* Kulpinski paced the offense with 12 assists.
 
* For Alvernia, Rachel Sipling recorded a match-high 18 kills to go along with seven digs. Cierra Roberts added 11 kills, while Abigail McGinley finished with 14 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 5-6 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series. Abington was facing Alvernia for just the third time and the first since 2014.  The Golden Wolves have a slight edge in the series with a 2-1 record.
 
Two to go til 1,000
Kulpinski needs just two more assists to become the third player in program history to reach 1,000 assists in a single career.  She combined to record 47 assists this afternoon leaving with her two short of the milestone at 998.  Kulpinski will have a chance to set the milestone in front of the home crowd in the Athletic Building next Saturday.
 
Postseason Picture
The Nittany Lions officially clinched the third seed in the upcoming United East Tournament with the win over Harrisburg.  Abington sits at 3-3 in the conference standings with Penn State Berks and Harrisburg still to face one another on Wednesday with both holding a 2-3 record in conference.  Regardless of the outcome, Abington holds both tie-break scenarios thanks to its regular season victories over Berks and Harrisburg.
 
Next Up
Abington will be hosting its first postseason match since the 2019 quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 4.  Pairings and match times will be available at the conclusion of United East regular season on Wednesday.
