Abington Hosts St. Mary’s in Volt Division Semifinals

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team, fresh off claiming the top-seed in the Volt Division as well as the Volt Division Regular Season title, will host fourth-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.) in the United East Conference (UEC) Divisional Semifinals on Monday afternoon at Memorial Field.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.

About Penn State Abington
The Nittany Lions wrapped up the regular season with a 9-4-4 overall record and a near-perfect 5-0-1 mark in United East play.  As a result, the Nittany Lions claimed its first regular season title since 2018.  Abington clinched the top seed in the Volt Division with a 2-0 victory against St. Mary's in the regular season finale.  Juniors Eljo Agolli and Arsene Bado lead the Nittany Lions in scoring this season with career-high 27 and 26 points respectively.  Agolli has totaled a career-high 11 goals to go along with five assists.  Bado reached double-digit goals for the second straight season with 10 and has assisted on six others setting a new career-high. Senior Mike Thomas leads the United East with a career-high 10 assists.  Thomas ranks second all-time with 18 career assists.
 
The Abington defense has allowed just 18 goals this season; second lowest in the United East.  The team also has the second-lowest goals against average at 1.06.  Senior goalkeeper Matt Sheldon leads the United East with a 0.98 goals against average which is also a career-low.  Sheldon has totaled 54 saves through the regular season and owns an 8-3-3 record with four shutouts.
 
About St. Mary's
The Seahawks (9-6-3, 3-2-1 UEC) will be returning to Memorial Field for the second time in less than a week after defeating fifth-seeded Penn College, 5-1, in the Divisional Quarterfinals on Saturday.  Five different players scored goals for the Seahawks in the one-sided victory. Elliot Hodges leads St. Mary's in scoring this year with 20 points after totaling nine goals and two assists through the regular season.  Zack Glime, who scored against Penn College, has seven goals and two assists with 16 points.
 
All-Time Series
Abington and St. Mary's has met six times previously, including once in the postseason.  In last year's United East Semifinals, the Seahawks defeated Abington, 2-1, in overtime.  The Nittany Lions picked up their first-ever victory against St. Mary's in the regular season finale this past Wednesday.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are making their 10th appearance in the postseason and seventh straight since the 2016 campaign with the exception of 2020 when the season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.  Abington is 8-6-1 all-time in the NEAC/United East Tournament, including championship titles in 2017 and 2018.

Next Up
The winner of Monday's semifinal will advance to the Volt Division Final on Wednesday, Nov. 1 and face the winner of the other semifinal contest between #2 Penn State Harrisburg and #3 Lancaster Bible College.  The highest remaining seed will host Wednesday's Divisional Final.
