Abington Edged by William Paterson, 69-67

Hackettstown, N.J. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team fell short to William Paterson University, 69-67, in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center on the campus of Centenary University.  The two teams were competing in the Cyclone Holiday Classic hosted by the Centenary.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 63-55 with just over five minutes to play in regulation. The Nittany Lions nearly erased an eight-point deficit to tie the game.  Abington came within one point of tying the score on two occasions with the latter coming with 2:49 on the clock.  Junior Kobe Devine, making his Nittany Lion debut, scored a layup basket to make the score 65-64.
 
* The Pioneers answered with back-to-back scores on their next two possessions to increase their lead to five points at 69-64 with less than two minutes on the clock. 
 
* Fifth-year guard Alex Podolski drilled a clutch three-pointer on the Nittany Lions' next possession to make it a 69-67 game. 
 
* Abington had multiple chances to tie the score in the final 1:36 but was unable to connect on a basket, including the game's final attempt as time expired.  The Nittany Lions' defense held the Pioneers scoreless in that span.
 
* Abington held the game's largest lead with an 11-point advantage in the first half.  The Nittany Lions led 13-11 midway through the half and used a 9-0 run to lead 22-11 by the 8:05 mark.  Sophomore Brendan Werner capped the run after splitting a pair of free throws.
 
* The Nittany Lions led 36-28 at the half after junior Kolby Miller scored the final basket of the opening half.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Four players scored in double-figures for the Nittany Lions, including Miller who scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.  He also had four rebounds and two steals.
 
* Senior Jake Schalki recorded his seventh straight double-double as he finished with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds tying his season-high.  
 
* Podolski tallied a team-high 16 points to go along with three rebounds, four assists and two steals.
 
* Redshirt sophomore Christian Niles totaled 12 points, while junior Na'Kai Carew added seven points and four rebounds.
 
* On the defensive side, Devine recorded a game-high six steals tying the program record for most steals in a game.  The last player to do so was Vincent Luciano who totaled six steals against Gallaudet University on February 1, 2017.
 
* For William Paterson, Andre Wells totaled a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds.  MJ Moncrieffe finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and William Paterson.

Abington is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 30 as the Nittany Lions close out the Cyclone Holiday Classic against host Centenary.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
