Abington Advances to First-Ever Conference Final; Defeats Harrisburg, 63-56

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team will be heading to its first-ever conference championship game after the Nittany Lions knocked off the reigning United East Conference (UEC) champions, Penn State Harrisburg, by the score of 63-56, in the semifinals on Friday night at Horst Athletic Center on the campus of Lancaster Bible College. 
 
Abington, seeded third in this year's tournament, will face host Lancaster Bible in Saturday's United East Championship game.  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. The Chargers defeated Wells College earlier in the evening in their semifinal matchup.

How It Happened
 
* In a low scoring first half, Abington trailed 21-19 after the game's first 20 minutes of action.  Junior Jake Schalki opened the second half with a three-pointer to give Abington a 22-21 lead.  From that point on, the Nittany Lions never trailed.  Harrisburg tied the game at 24-24 after a three-pointer by Malik Holland but on the following possession Abington responded as Schalki once again hit a three to make the score 27-24 at the 17:10 mark.
 
* Midway through the half Harrisburg made it a one-point game at 39-38.  Abington followed with a 9-0 run to grab the game's first double-digit advantage at 48-38.  Senior Alex Podolski capped the run with a three-pointer with 7:43 to play in the half.
 
* Harrisburg came within five points of Abington's lead multiple times down the stretch but each time the Nittany Lions managed to make a stop or respond with a basket.  Abington converted 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to hold off Harrisburg.
 
* In the first half Abington trailed by as many as eight points when Harrisburg led 19-11 with 4:39 remaining until halftime.  Abington closed the half with a 8-2 run to come within two points of the lead entering the locker rooms at halftime at 21-19.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Abington had four players score in double-figures with senior Brian Randolph III leading the way with a game-high 19 points.  Randolph also finished with eight rebounds and four assists.
 
* Podolski added 14 points (5-9 FG) to go along with eight rebounds and four assists to share the team lead. 
 
* Schalki finished the night with 12 points (4-6 FG) and six boards, while senior Alex Salata III totaled 10 points and five rebounds. 
 
* Senior Isaac Kennon added seven points (3-4 FG) and five rebounds.
 
* For Harrisburg, Nate Curry scored a team-high 15 points, while Zegary Scott III finished with 14 points. 
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg in the program's Division III era and just the second matchup in the postseason.  Abington is now 3-9 versus Harrisburg in that span, including 1-1 in the postseason.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are appearing in their first-ever conference championship game.  Tonight's semifinal victory marked the team's first postseason victory since 2019 when Abington advanced to the then NEAC semifinal after defeating Saint Elizabeth, 93-66, in the quarterfinals.  Abington is now 3-4 all-time in the postseason.
 
Next Up
As previously mentioned, Abington will face top-seeded and host Lancaster Bible in the United East Championship game on Saturday.  Tip-off from the Horst Athletic Center is set for 4 p.m.  Both teams will be facing one another for the first time in postseason play.
