Abington Opens United East Play with Shutout Victory at Clarks Summit

South Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team opened United East Conference (UEC) play with a 9-0 triumph at Clarks Summit University on Friday at the Birchwood Tennis Club.  The win marked the team's sixth of the season surpassing last year's win total and was also the fourth shutout of the season.

How It Happened
 
* Abington opened the match with a 3-0 lead after taking all three doubles competitions.  Sophomore Andrew Brown and freshman Tim Belotserkovsky rallied to defeat Trevor Lawson and Andrew Taft at first doubles, 8-5.  The Abington duo found themselves trailing 5-2 before ripping off six straight points to take the match.
 
* At second doubles, juniors Neil Guarino and Josh Kurek led 4-3 over Jacob Judson and Owen Mileham before winning for of the next five points to take the match, 8-4.  Sophomore Kyle Elliott and freshman Nick Talarico defeated Sam Knapp and Harrison Michel, 8-3, at third doubles. Elliott and Talarico recorded the first five points of the match to open with a 5-0 lead.
 
* Brown and Kurek cruised to victories in their singles matches.  Brown defeated Judson in straight sets by the scores of 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, while Kurek finished off Lawson in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores at second singles.
 
* Guarino picked up the win at third singles as he defeated Michel in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.  Belotserkovsky also won his singles match in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Knapp at fourth singles.
 
* Talarico earned the win at fifth singles as he defeated Mileham with scores of 6-3 in both sets.
 
* Sophomore Jeevesh Gupta came back to defeat David Sage after dropping the first set by the score of 6-4 during his sixth singles match.  Gupta tied the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set.  He went on to take the third set, 7-5, after recording the final two points to break the 5-5 tie in the set.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Clarks Summit since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-0 versus the Defenders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 as the Nittany Lions host Lancaster Bible College in United East action.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts.
