Pitching Dominates as Abington Splits with Harrisburg

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday at Pollock Field.  Abington, behind a 12-strikeout performance by sophomore Gretchen Yanss, defeated Harrisburg 1-0 in game one.  Harrisburg took the second game by the score of 3-1.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Yanss drove in the game's lone run in the top of the third inning and continue to stifle the Harrisburg offense in the pitching circle.  Yanss limited Harrisburg to just four hits in seven innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Yanss earned her 12th win of the season and went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.
 
* Freshman Emily Foxhill went 2-for-3 and scored the game's lone run.
 
* Seniors Maddie Duffy and Megan Tomoney each had a hit for Abington.
 
* For Harrisburg, Mackenzie Sawdey (10-9) suffered the loss as she struck out eight batters allowing just one run on five hits.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Harrisburg scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first when Madelyn Lehigh scored on a passed ball.  Lehigh led the inning off with a bunt hit.
 
* Abington tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the second thanks to a run scoring triple by Duffy.  Freshman Jill Thomas scored on the play after reaching base on an error.
 
* The game didn't stay tied long as in the bottom of the second Lehigh connected on a two-run homer to give Harrisburg a 3-1 lead and eventual win by that score.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Yanss pitched three perfect innings of relief for Abington as she struck out five to total 17 K's on the day.  She now has 121 strike outs on the year; eight shy of tying the program's single season record of 129 set by Becca Dougherty in 2019.
 
* Duffy registered the team's lone RBI with a run scoring triple as she went 1-for-2 with a walk.
 
* Sophomore Callie Chambers went 1-for-2 with a double, while senior Jenna Gorman went 1-for-3.
 
* For Harrisburg, Kierstyn Smith (8-2) earned her eighth win of the season after going five innings.  Lehigh finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 23rd and 24th meetings between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 11-13 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
20 Wins and Counting
Abington reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time in the program's Division III era and for the second straight season.
 
Postseason Picture
Abington is currently tied with Harrisburg at 14-8 in the conference standings with Harrisburg holding the tie-break meaning if the season ended today Abington would be the fourth seed.  Penn College and Penn State Berks are currently tied for first with identical 18-4 records with Penn College holding the tie-break.  With one regular season doubleheader remaining, Abington can either finish third or fourth in the standings.
 
Next Up
Abington wraps up the regular season at Penn College.  However, due to the inclement weather that is supposed to hit the region this weekend the games have been postponed resulting in a delay to the end of the regular season.  More information on a potential rescheduled date will be available in the coming days.
