Abington Concludes Season at United East Tournament

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team saw its season come to a close after dropping two games on day two of the United East Conference (UEC) Tournament on Friday at the Penn State Harrisburg Baseball Field in Middletown, Pa.  The third-seeded Nittany Lions dropped a heartbreaker to top-seeded Harrisburg, 9-7, in extra innings earlier in the afternoon.  In an elimination game against second-seeded Penn College, the Nittany Lions fell short by the score of 10-7.

How It Happened (vs. Harrisburg)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 3-0 lead after putting up three runs in the opening frame.  Senior Josh Baar connected on a two-run double in the inning with junior Justin Fogel scoring the game's first run earlier in the inning on a passed ball.
 
* The Nittany Lions increased their lead to 4-0 in the second when junior Eric Rollins scored on a wild pitch.  Rollins led the inning off with a base hit to left field.  Abington made it a 5-0 game two innings later.  Rollins once again led the inning off with a hit; this time a double to left field.  Senior Sean Doherty followed with a base hit to center field scoring Rollins.
 
* In the bottom of the inning, Drew Bechtold got Harrisburg on the board with a two-run homer.  The regular season champs added single runs in each of the next two innings to come within one run of Abington's lead.  In the bottom of the seventh, Harrisburg tied the game and grabbed its first lead with a two-run inning.  Carlos Irizarry and Tim Haftl each drove in runs as Harrisburg led 6-5.
 
* In the bottom of the eight, Lucas Floyd led the inning off with a solo home run to give Harrisburg a 7-5 advantage.
 
* In the top of the ninth, senior Zach Morales drew an important two-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate.  Baar, who already drove in a pair of runs earlier in the game, launched a shot over the center field fence to tie the game at 7-7 and send the game into extra innings.
 
* In the bottom of the 10th, Haftl led the inning off with an infield hit for Harrisburg.  Two batters later, Floyd came through with his second home run of the game for the walk-off victory.

*  Baar finished the game 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI.  His clutch ninth inning home run marked his eighth home run of the season and 14th of his career.
 
* Doherty went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI. 
 
* Rollins also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
 
* Junior Tim Petrucelli recorded his 100th career hit with a base hit in the first inning. 
 
* Fogel went 1-for-4 with a run as he extended his season-long hitting streak to 25 straight games.
 
* Redshirt sophomore Alex Margot went five innings holding Harrisburg to just three runs while striking out seven batters.
 
* For Harrisburg, Floyd finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while hitting a pair of home runs. Taftl finished 2-for-3 with a home run.
 
How It Happened (vs. Penn College)
 
* Trailing 7-3 entering the seventh inning, Abington erupted for four runs to tie the game at 7-7.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of two fielding errors by the Wildcats in the inning.  Senior Montana Milward, sophomore Steve Corrado and senior Louis Rossner each drove in runs.
 
* Penn College regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a three-run homer by Quinn Hanafin that made the score 10-7.
 
* Abington's only lead of the game came in the top half of the first when Doherty scored on a throwing error to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.  The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run by Tristan Current.

* Fogel finished the game 1-for-5 as he once again extended his season-long hitting streak.  He'll finish the season having hit safely in 26 straight games.  This is the second straight year that Fogel ended the season on a 20-plus game hitting streak.  He finished the 2022 campaign with a 20-game hitting streak.
 
* Doherty scored a pair of runs and drove in one while reaching base three times off walks.  Rossner also drew three walks in the game and was credited with an RBI.
 
* Morales finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and a run.
 
* Sophomore Owen Lynch struck out a career-high five batters in 4.2 innings.
 
* For Penn College, Hanafin finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs and five RBI.  Current went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were making its 11th trip to the United East Tournament and seventh straight with the exception of the 2020 season when the tournament was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Abington is now 15-20 in the postseason with championship game appearances in 2019, 2021 and 2022.  The team won the title in 2019.
 
News and Notes
 
* Morales concludes his career with 213 hits, 25 home runs, 177 RBI and 149 runs ranking second all-time in all four categories 
 
* Fogel hit a career-high 15 home runs and now has 25 in his career as he's tied with Morales for second most all-time.  Fogel is also ranked among the program leaders in RBI (102), hits (152) and runs (119).  He also set a career-high with a .497 batting average which is the second highest batting average in a single season in program history behind Ryan McCarty's .529 average in 2022.  Fogel also has the third highest batting average at .484 from the 2022 season.
 
* Petrucelli also had a career year with the long ball as he belted 13 this season.  He finishes his career with 21 home runs; third most in program history.
 
* Senior Brandon Hightower struck out 69 batters on the year tying Daniel Hill for most strikeouts in a single season.  Hill struck out 69 batters in 2011 and had 67 K's in 2010.
