Abington Closes Out Season at United East Tournament; Yanss Sets Single Season Strikeout Record

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team saw its season come to an end after falling to Penn State Harrisburg, 6-1, in an elimination game at the United East Conference (UEC) Tournament on Monday afternoon at Elm Park.  Third-seeded Harrisburg will face top-seed and host Penn College in another elimination game tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to the championship round against second-seeded Penn State Berks.

How It Happened
 
* Harrisburg's Krys Moore drove in the game's first run with a leadoff home run to start the second inning. Harrisburg doubled its lead an inning later when Steph Reider forced home a run with a sacrifice fly.
 
* Harrisburg extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth.  With the bases loaded, Reider connected with a run scoring hit and was followed with a two-run double by Rylee Martinez.  Harrisburg tacked on a run in the sixth to make the score 6-0.
 
* Abington spoiled Harrisburg's shutout bid in the top half of the seventh after back-to-back doubles from sophomore Hailey Gamble and senior Jenna Gorman to score the team's lone run.

* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss struck out eight batters in six innings of work for Abington.  With her eight K's, Yanss finished the season with 134 strikeouts setting a new program single season record. Former standout Becca Dougherty held the previous record of 129 strikeouts from the 2019 season.  Yanss also had a hit in four at-bats.
 
* Gamble finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and a double.  She went a combined 4-for-6 in the two tournament games.
 
* For Harrisburg, Madelyn Lehigh finished 3-for-3 with two runs, while Reider and Martinez each drove in two runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 11-14 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are now 10-17 in the postseason in 10 appearances.  The team has qualified for the postseason every year since 2013 with the exception of the 2020 season when the tournament was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
