Abington Rolls Past Brandywine to Open United East Play

Abington, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team extended its season-long winning streak to eight straight matches after defeating Penn State Brandywine in the United East Conference (UEC) opener on Thursday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  The team's winning streak matches the longest since winning eight straight during the 2022 season.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the first six points of the match and turned it into a 12-4 run and never looked back.  The Nittany Lions led the entire way and closed out the set scoring six of the final eight points to win the set, 25-16. Sophomore Kayla Mason recorded six of her match-high 12 kills in the set.
 
* In the second set, Abington used a mini 4-0 run to break a 4-4 tie to take the lead.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of four errors by Brandywine to account for the four points. Abington led by as many as eight points at 22-14 after another pair of Brandywine miscues.  Abington closed out the set with a 25-18 victory off a kill by sophomore Brynn Atkins.
 
* Brandywine opened the third set with a 5-1 run but Abington quickly tied the set at 5-5 after a kill from Mason capped a 4-0 run.  Later in the set with the score tied at 10-10, back-to-back errors by Brandywine gave Abington a 12-10 advantage.  Abington held on to the lead the rest of the way and used a 6-1 run late to extend its lead to 23-15.  Abington took the set, 25-16.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Mason recorded a match-high 12 kills to go along with two block assists and three digs.  She made just two errors on 28 total attacks for an attack percentage of .357.
 
* Freshman Fabiola Medina totaled a match-high 20 digs.
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm recorded a match-high 25 assists to go along with three kills and eight digs.
 
* Junior Alyssa Flickinger had three solo blocks on the night with five digs and a pair of kills.
 
* Atkins added four kills and five total blocks, including two solo and three block assists.
 
* For Brandywine, Emma O'Reilly and Anna Ramirez each had five kills, while Britney Howell led the team with 12 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 3-1 versus Brandywine in the all-time series.  Both teams met earlier in September with Abington winning, 3-1.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 as the Nittany Lions head south to face Notre Dame of Maryland University in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.
