Abington Falls to Chargers in United East Quarterfinals

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team's postseason run came to an end on Saturday morning as the Nittany Lions fell short to second-seeded Lancaster Bible College, 3-1, in the United East Conference (UEC) quarterfinals.  The seventh-seeded Nittany Lions finished their season 21-6 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

How It Happened
 
* Abington bounced back after dropping the first set, 25-14, with a second set victory to tie the match at 1-1.  The Nittany Lions registered a match-high 16 kills in the second set, including five kills from sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin and four by junior Alyssa Flickinger.  Abington trailed 7-0 early in the set but used a 9-2 run to tie the set at 9-9.  Later in the set the Chargers established a 19-17 lead, but Abington fired off the final eight points to take the set, 25-19. 
 
* In the third set Abington trailed 17-11 but quickly turned things around and rallied to score the next six points in the set to tie the score at 17-17. Three aces by freshman McKinley Grimm helped fuel the run. However, Lancaster Bible followed by scoring the final eight points in the set for a 25-17 win.
 
* Lancaster Bible opened the fourth set on a 6-0 run and never looked back.  The Nittany Lions came within four points of the lead at 11-7 but were unable to get any closer as the set progressed. The Chargers led by double-digits at 23-13 before taking the set, 25-16.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Brynn Atkins became the program's all-time blocks leader as she totaled three blocks in the match (1BS | 2BA) to increase her career total to 119.  She entered the match tied with former standout Andia Anderson with 116 blocks.  Atkins also broke Anderson's record for most career block assists with 72 and ranks third in solo blocks with 47.  
 
* Jamaladdin led the Nittany Lions with 12 kills to go along with three block assists.
 
* Flickinger finished the match with eight kills, three total blocks (2BS | 1BA) and four digs.
 
* Freshman Ellie Van Otten added eight kills.
 
* Grimm totaled 32 assists and had 11 digs on defense.  She also led the team with three aces.
 
* Junior Morgan Schaefer registered 20-plus digs for the fourth straight match as she finished with a team-best 21.
 
* Freshman Fabiola Medina totaled 15 digs, while fellow freshman Olivia Juan finished the match with 12 digs.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Madison Reap led with a match-high 17 kills to go along with 16 digs.  Leah Helman finished with a match-high 22 digs. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-13 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions made their fifth appearance and second straight in the postseason since joining Division III in 2011. Abington is now 3-5 all-time in the postseason.
 
20-Plus Wins
Abington finished the year with 21 victories matching the 2016 team for most wins in the program's NCAA era.  The 2016 squad finished 21-10 that year marking the first 20-win campaign since joining Division III. Overall, Abington has had 10 20-win seasons dating back to 1973, including a program record 28 victories in 1993.
