Abington Scores 23 Runs in Rout of Gordon

Davenport, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team scored a season-high 23 runs as the Nittany Lions defeated Gordon College, 23-6, in a non-conference contest at the RussMatt Invitational on Monday afternoon at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.

How It Happened
 
* After Gordon scored two runs in the top half of the first, the Nittany Lions responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning.  Abington drew two bases loaded walks from Josh Baar and Gabe Marrero, while Montana Milward and Donato Incollingo each drove in runs in the inning.
 
* The Fighting Scots tied the game at 4-4 in the third with another pair of runs as Alex Razzaboni drove in two runs with a two-out base hit.
 
* Abington once again responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-4 advantage.  Sean Doherty drove in the first of his six runs before Shane Fillman connected on a three-run shot to cap the scoring.
 
* The Nittany Lions broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with five more runs coming across.  The first three batters in the inning reached base and then was followed by back-to-back walks by Incollingo and Eric Rollins.  Marrero was then hit by a pitch as another run crossed the plate.  Doherty then drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line to make the score 12-4.
 
* Abington tacked on three more runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run triple by Doherty.  The Nittany Lions scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth and added three more bases loaded walks to account for runs.  Abington drew 13 walks as a team.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* It was a career day for Doherty as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and a career-high six RBI.  He also walked twice in the game.
 
* Brandon Hightower (1-1) earned the win as he went 4.1 innings with five strikeouts.  With his five K's he now has 100 for his career becoming the seventh player in program history to record 100 or more strikeouts. 
 
* Fillman finished 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI.  His third inning home run marked the first of his Abington career.
 
* Incollingo also drove in multiple runs as he finished the day with three RBI to go along with three runs.  He walked three times with two base on balls resulting in an RBI.
 
* Milward went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Ryan Lenderman collected two hits in three at-bats while scoring twice.
 
* Marrero walked in all four of his at-bats and was hit by a pitch.  He finished with three runs scored and three RBI.
 
* Rollins finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
 
* Derek Aub made his collegiate debut and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.  He struck out three batters and didn't allow a single hit.   
 
* For Gordon, Andrew Hartman went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while CJ Demers finished 3-for-3 with two runs.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Gordon.

Abington returns to action tomorrow at the RussMatt Invitational as the Nittany Lions face Moravian University.  First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
