Abington Sweeps Chargers in Home Finale

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team completed the season sweep over Lancaster Bible College as the Nittany Lions hosted the Chargers in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  Abington won the opener, 6-0, and completed the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* A two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning led to the game's first run.  With two outs in the inning, freshman Marlena Hacker singled to right to keep the inning alive.  Freshman Isabella Antosiewicz then drew a walk before junior Hailey Gamble came through with a base hit scoring Hacker.
 
* The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Nittany Lions added to their lead with a pair of runs.  Hacker drove in freshman Rylee Albany with a triple to the gap and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Antosiewicz to give Abington a 3-0 lead.
 
* Abington doubled its lead in the sixth with three more runs.  Hacker drew a bases loaded walk to force home junior Gretchen Yanss.  Antosiewicz then stepped up with a base hit to score both freshman Danielle Procopio and sophomore Emily Foxhill.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Yanss recorded her sixth shutout of the season and her 10th victory as she went six innings.  She scattered just four hits and struck out seven batters.
 
* Antosiewicz drove in a season-high three runs as she went 1-for-2 with a walk.
 
* Hacker finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Junior Hailey Gamble also had multiple hits in the game as she finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Sheyenne King went 3-for-3 accounting for three of the Chargers' four hits. 
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to two clutch two-out hits.  Freshman Ava Livingtston connected on a two-out double to left to score Gamble and Yanss followed with a triple to right-center field to bring Livingston home.
 
* The Nittany Lions doubled their lead in the third to take a 4-0 lead.  Yanss hit her second triple of the came to score Gamble who led the inning off with a double.  Yanss then scored on a sacrifice fly by Procopio.
 
* Abington added a run in the fourth to increase its advantage to 5-0.  Antosiewicz drove in Hacker with a sacrifice fly.  Hacker led the inning off with a hit to left and advanced all the way to third on the play after the ball went through the Chargers' leftfielder.
 
* The Chargers broke up the Nittany Lions' hopes for a second shutout in the top of the fifth after Noelle Martin drove in two runners with a two-out single. 
 
* Lancaster Bible made things interesting in the top of the seventh.  Another two-out hit by Martin scored King to make the score 5-3.  However, with the go-ahead run at the plate, Procopio struck out Riley Danko to close out the game to complete the season sweep of the Chargers.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Five players had multiple hits in the game for the Nittany Lions.  Yanss went 2-for-2 with two triples and two RBI.  Gamble went 2-for-2 with two runs and two doubles.
 
* Livingston finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while freshman Sara Slimm went 2-for-4 as well. Hacker also had multiple hits with a 2-for-3 performance.
 
* Freshman Paula Casale picked up her seventh victory of the season as she went five innings allowing just two runs.  Casale also struck out four batters.
 
* Procopio earned her third save of the season after pitching two innings of relief. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Phoebe Clemens went 3-for-3 with a run, while Martin finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 33rd and 34th matchups between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 27-7 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 27 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Harrisburg in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 1 p.m.
