Abington Falls to Seahawks in United East Tournament

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team saw its season come to a close after falling to fourth-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.) in an elimination game at the United East Conference (UEC) Volt Division Tournament on Saturday morning at the Penn State Harrisburg baseball field.

How It Happened
 
* After allowing a run in the top half of the first, the Abington offense responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead.  Senior Montana Milward tied the game with a bases loaded single that scored fellow senior Sean Doherty.  Senior Josh Baar then connected on a grand slam home run adding to his postseason lore at the Harrisburg Baseball Field. 
 
* Despite the four-run advantage, the Nittany Lions' lead would be short-lived as the Seahawks answered back with six runs in the top half of the second. Chase O'Dell highlighted the inning with a grand slam which gave the Seahawks a 7-5 lead.
 
* Abington made it a one-run game with a run in the bottom of the second.  Doherty, who led the inning off with a single, later scored on a passed ball to make the score 7-6.
 
* Later in the game, St. Mary's added to its lead with a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth with back-to-back run scoring hits from Trevor Smith and Aaron Wathen.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-7.  Doherty stole third and went on to score on a throwing error by the Seahawks' catcher.
 
* St. Mary's blew the game open in the fifth with a five-run frame that increased the lead to 14-7.  Cole Tarteton and Wathen each had two-run hits in the inning.
 
* Abington scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and then once again in the ninth.  Senior Montana Milward led the ninth inning off with a solo home run.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Baar's first inning grand slam marked his third home run of the season as he finished the game 2-for-5 with a run and four RBI.
 
* Milward went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.  His ninth inning homer marked his 10th of the season and the fourth in his last five games.
 
* Eric Rollins also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 3-for-5.
 
* Doherty went 2-for-3 with two walks while scoring four times in the game.
 
* For St. Mary's, O'Dell went 4-for-5 with four runs and four RBI.  Smith also had four hits as he finished 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2022 season. The Nittany Lions are now 6-5 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.  This was the first-ever matchup between the two teams in the postseason.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were making their 12th postseason appearance and eighth straight.  Abington is now 15-22 in the postseason with championship game appearances in 2019, 2021 and 2022.  The team won the title in 2019.
