Abington Falls to Harrisburg in Elimination Game

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team saw its season come to an end after falling to top-seeded Penn State Harrisburg, 7-6, in extra innings in an elimination game at the United East Conference (UEC) Volt Division Tournament on Saturday morning at Pollack Field.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the game's first runs with a three-run second inning.  Freshman Marlena Hacker drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first run, while freshman Isabella Antosiewicz and junior Hailey Gamble followed with back-to-back run scoring hits.
 
* The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 4-0 in the top half of the fifth after a run scoring double by freshman Ava Livingston
 
* In the bottom of the fifth, Harrisburg responded with four runs to tie the game at 4-4.  Sierra Sims drove in the first run with a single up the middle and was followed with a bases loaded walk by Aspen Walker to make the score 4-2.  Three batters later, Elaina Gates drove in a pair of runs to tie the game at 4-4.
 
* Abington regained the lead in the top half of the sixth when Gamble came through with a clutch two-run single to give the Nittany Lions a 6-4 advantage.
 
* Harrisburg got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning with a run scoring hit by Walker to make the score 6-5.  In the bottom of the seventh, Harrisburg tied the game to force extra innings.  Yeager grounded out to second but it was enough to score the tying run.
 
* Both teams went down in order in the eighth inning.  In the top of the ninth, Abington managed to move the go-ahead run to third but was unable to get the run home. 
 
* In the bottom of the ninth, Harrisburg's Rylee Martinez advanced Walker to third with a sacrifice bunt.  During the next at-bat, Walker scored on a passed ball to give Harrisburg a 7-6 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Gamble finished the game 3-for-5 with a run and a team-high three RBI. 
 
* Hacker also had multiple hits as she went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Junior Gretchen Yanss (11-10) was the pitcher of record as she struck out five batters in 6.1 innings of work.  Yanss finished the season with 144 strikeouts capping her new single season record. She concluded the season with a career-low 1.91 earned run average.
 
* Sophomore Emily Foxhill finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored.
 
* For Harrisburg, Walker went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI while drawing two walks.  Madelyn Lehigh finished 2-for-4 with two runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 31st meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 12-19 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series. It was also the third time Abington and Harrisburg met up in the postseason with two of those times coming this weekend.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are now 12-19 in the postseason in 11 total appearances.  The team has qualified for the postseason every year since 2013.
 
2024 Comes to an End
Abington finishes the 2024 season with a 20-20 record.  The Nittany Lions have reached the 20-win mark for the seventh time in the program's Division III era and for the third straight season.
