Widener Defeats Abington in Non-Conference Action

Chester, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped a road contest against Widener University by the score of 96-68 on Friday night at the Schwartz Center on day one of the two-day Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness.

How It Happened
 
* Abington nearly erased an early 12-point deficit after Widener took a 18-6 lead off a Jacob Aryee three-pointer at the 16-minute mark.  The Nittany Lions responded with an 8-0 started by a three-pointer from senior JoJo Kelly.  Junior K'Mari Smith finished the rally with a layup that made the score 18-15 with 11:09 to play in the half.
 
* Widener eventually rebuilt its double-digit lead and led 29-17 with less than eight minutes to play in the opening half.  Jayden Lawrence hit a three to push the lead back to 12.
 
* The Pride would go on to take an eight-point lead into the locker rooms at halftime with a 43-35 advantage.
 
* In the second half, Abington came within two possessions of the lead when sophomore Tyler Meinel scored a layup to make the score 43-38 three minutes into the new half.  However, from there the Pride went on a run that saw its lead swell back to double-digits.  Widener took a 21-point (81-60) lead with less than five minutes to play after a TJ Bryson basket.

* Kelly is well within striking distance of reaching the 1,000-career point milestone after scoring 17 points.  He now needs 14 points to reach 1,000 for his career.  Kelly also totaled six rebounds and shot 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
* Smith scored a team-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.  It marked his second straight 20-plus point performance.
 
* Meinel also scored in double-figures as he totaled a season-high 16 points after shooting 7-of-11 in the game. He also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season.
 
* For Widener, Aryee scored a game-high 24 points after connecting on 6-of-9 from deep range.  Kori Segich recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Widener.
 
Next Up
Abington wraps up the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness on Saturday when the Nittany Lions face Washington and Jefferson College.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.
