Abington Drops Road Contest to Hawks, 76-68

New York, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest at Hunter College by the score of 76-68 on Saturday afternoon at the Hunter College Sportsplex.

How It Happened
 
* Hunter jumped out to a 10-3 lead and grabbed a double-digit lead by quarters end after Alexa Charles drained a three-pointer as time expired.  Charles' three gave the Hawks a 17-7 advantage heading into the second quarter.
 
* The Hawks opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to increase their lead to 26-9 after Makkedah Murray drained a pair of free throws at the eight-minute mark.
 
* Hunter led by as many as 22 points in the second quarter when Charles made two free throws to increase the advantage to 42-20.  The Hawks went on to lead, 43-26, at the half.
 
* Hunter maintained its double-digit lead through the second half despite the Nittany Lions chipping away at the lead late in the fourth quarter.  Abington cut the deficit down to single digits after sophomore Xenia Gillis scored a layup to make the score 76-68.  However, time was not on Abington's side, with Gillis' basket coming with only :33 seconds remaining in regulation.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Five players scored in double-figures for the Nittany Lions, including senior Naila Newman and junior Amirah Hackney who both totaled 14 points.  Newman also added nine rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Hackney finished with three boards, three assists and five steals.
 
* Junior Amina Reid totaled 12 points while also adding four rebounds, five assists and three steals. With her three steals, Reid now has 198 in her career; two shy of becoming just the third player in program history to reach 200 career steals.
 
* Junior Layla Reid finished with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.
 
* Gillis came off the bench and totaled 13 points (5-6 FG) and eight rebounds.
 
* For Hunter, Charles led all scorers with 32 points (12-20 FG) to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and nine steals. Mia Fuller added 11 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Hunter.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action after the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, Dec. 1 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Swarthmore College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
