Abington Drops Season Opener at Muhlenberg

Allentown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team fell short in its season opener at Muhlenberg College by the score of 81-75 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

How It Happened
 
* In the opening quarter, neither team held a lead larger than one possession until Muhlenberg closed the quarter with a 4-0 run.  Junior Amina Reid tied the game at 17-17 with a three-pointer before the Mules scored four straight points capped off with a three-pointer by Katie McGrath to make the score 21-17 heading into the second quarter.
 
* In the second quarter, the Nittany Lions outscored Muhlenberg, 21-11, to lead 38-32 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.  Junior Amirah Hackney scored 12 of her team-high 25 points in the quarter while connecting on three three-pointers.
 
* The game featured six ties in the third quarter with both teams holding onto the lead.  With the score tied at 56-56, the Mules scored four straight points in the final minute before sophomore Tarianda Washington scored as time expired to make the score 60-58.
 
* Abington regained the lead early in the fourth quarter.  A layup basket by Hackney gave the Nittany Lions a 65-64 lead at the 7:19 mark.
 
* As the quarter progressed, the Mules regained the lead and held a five-point lead with 3:24 to play after a basket from Lyndsey Costigan.
 
* Abington went on a mini-run and tied the game at 75-75 off a jumper by senior Nia Newman with 1:31 left on the clock.  However, Muhlenberg responded by closing the game out with a 6-0 run.  The Mules' defense held Abington to 0-of-4 shooting during that span.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hackney scored a team-high 25 points to go along with nine rebounds and a career-high six steals.
 
* Junior Layla Reid recorded her first career double-double as she finished with 10 points and team-high 10 rebounds.
 
* Junior Amina Reid also scored in double-figures as she totaled 12 points to go along with six steals.  With her six steals, Reid moved into third place all-time with 181 career steals surpassing former standout Angela Sanders (178). 
 
* Naila Newman and Nia Newman each totaled nine points, while Washington added seven points and nine boards.
 
* For Muhlenberg, Katie McGrath totaled a game-high 26 points, while Veronica Dawson added 21 points.  Costigan grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Muhlenberg.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Washington College (Md.) in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
