Abington Too Much for Aggies in Non-Conference Matchup

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team won its third straight game after defeating Delaware Valley University, 89-73, in a non-conference contest on Friday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 20-12 after the Aggies' Jayla Rivera knocked down a three-pointer to open the second quarter.  From there, the Nittany Lions outscored their opponent, 30-9, to take a 42-29 lead at the half.  Abington shot 66.7-percent from the field (12-18 FG), including 4-of-6 from deep range during its second quarter surge.
 
* A quick 9-0 run, jump-started by a three-pointer from junior Layla Reid, gave Abington a 21-20 lead at the 7:20 mark. The Aggies answered and regained the lead, but the Nittany Lions tied the game at 25-25 after a layup score by junior Amina Reid.
 
* Over the final five minutes of the quarter, Abington proceeded to outscore Delaware Valley, 17-4, to close out the half.
 
* In the third quarter, the Abington lead never dipped below double-digits as the Nittany Lions increased their advantage of the Aggies to as many as 19 points.  Sophomore Tarianda Washington split a pair of free throws with 4:14 to play in the quarter to make the score 56-37.
 
* The Aggies cut the deficit down to 62-50 at the end of the third after Alexis Wright converted a pair of free throws. Ciana Feliciano knocked down a three-pointer to open the fourth to bring the Aggies to within single digits for the first time since the second quarter.  Delaware Valley came as close as eight points of the lead later in the quarter when Wright hit a jumper to make the score 66-58 at the 7:36 mark.
 
* Layla Reid and senior Nia Newman answered with back-to-back three-pointers to push the Abington lead back to double-digits at 72-58 with 6:52 to play.  The Nittany Lions's maintained their double-digit lead the rest of the way.  Abington increased its lead to as many as 20 points after a three-pointer by Amina Reid made the score 87-67 with 1:28 remaining in regulation.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Nia Newman finished with a season-high 20 points after shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.  Newman has now scored in double-figures in four of her last five games.  In addition, with her 20-point performance she is now 20 points away from reaching the 1,000 career points milestone.  She'll enter her next game with 980 career points.
 
* Senior Naila Newman also scored a season-high as she finished with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.  Newman also had a pair of steals on defense.
 
* Amina Reid added a season-high 18 points and dished out a team-high six assists.  Reid now has 285 assists in her career and currently sits third all-time in the team's record book.  Former standouts Trish Watson (305) and Shayna Rodriguez (301) hold the top two spots.
 
* Sophomore Xenia Gillis recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a 17-point/12-rebound performance. Gillis also had three steals and two blocks.
 
* For Delaware Valley, Wright finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds to record a double-double.  Feliciano added 11 points, while Whitney Evans finished with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Delaware Valley since the start of the 2017-18 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-4 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle until Tuesday, Dec. 30 when the Nittany Lions host nationally ranked No. 11 Trinity College (Conn.) in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
