Abington Holds Off Swarthmore in 66-58 Victory

Swarthmore, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team used a fourth quarter surge to defeat Swarthmore College, 66-58, in a non-conference contest on Monday night at the Tarble Pavillion. Junior Amirah Hackney scored nine of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter.

How It Happened
 
* Swarthmore tied the game at 49-49 after Carly Murphy knocked down a three-pointer at the 5:35 mark of the fourth quarter.  Abington regained the lead on its next possession after Hackney converted a pair of free throws.  After a defensive stop in which Swarthmore missed a pair of three-pointers, the Nittany Lions increased their lead to two possessions thanks to a fastbreak score by senior Nia Newman.
 
* Abington, ahead 53-49, scored four more unanswered points to secure an 8-0 game which gave the Nittany Lions their largest lead of the game at 57-49.  Hackney finished with a layup basket as Abington led by eight points with less than four minutes to play.
 
* Both teams exchanged baskets on the game's next seven possessions until Swarthmore made a stop and cut the lead to five at 63-58.  The Abington defense held the Garnet without a point the final 1:52 of the game with 0-of-4 shooting from the field and one turnover in that span.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hackney recorded her fourth 20-plus point performance of the season after netting a game-high 24 points (10-21 FG); one shy of her season-high.  She also totaled nine rebounds and three steals on defense.
 
* Nia Newman scored a season-high 13 points (5-9 FG) to go along with 10 rebounds as she registered her first double-double of the season.
 
* Junior Amina Reid dished out a game-high seven assists and had three steals.  With her three steals, Reid surpassed 200 for her career as she now has 201 career steals. She is the third player in program history to reach 200-plus steals in a career.  Reid trails only Trish Watson (227) and Shayna Rodriguez (245) for most steals.
 
* Senior Naila Newman finished the night with 12 points, while junior Layla Reid added 10 points and four boards.
 
* Sophomore Xenia Gillis grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with seven points and four blocked shots.
 
* For Swarthmore, Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson scored a team-high 19 points, while Raven Richardson grabbed a team-best 15 rebounds.  Catherine Chadwell totaled 13 points and seven rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the third meeting between Abington and Swarthmore since the start of the 2018-19 season and the first since 2019-20.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Garnet in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 as the Nittany Lions being United East Conference play with a road contest at Penn College.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
