Abington Wins Home Opener Against Brandywine

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball returned home to the Athletic Building for the first time this season after spending the first eight games on the road.  The Nittany Lions won their home opener with a 67-52 victory over Penn State Brandywine in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
 
* Brandywine jumped out to a 10-5 lead midway through the first quarter.  However, Abington closed out the final five-plus minutes of the opening quarter with a 10-2 run to hold a 15-12 advantage.  Sophomore Xenia Gillis capped the scoring with a layup basket in the final seconds.
 
* Abington never relinquished the lead despite Brandywine coming within two points of the lead at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter.  Raelyn Loper hit a jumper to make the score 16-14.
 
* Sophomore Tarianda Washington and junior Amina Reid split free throws on the team's next two possessions that jump started an 11-3 run to close out the quarter.  Washington finished the run with a basket in the final minute to give Abington a 27-17 halftime lead.
 
* Abington put the game away late in the third quarter even though Brandywine shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the field.  Leading 38-28 with four minutes to play in the quarter, Abington went on a 14-1 run to lead 52-29 with 1:39 remaining.  Sophomore Sereniti Minor capped the surge with a layup score after forcing a turnover on the defensive end. 
 
* Abington maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the game, including holding its biggest lead of the day of 23 points on multiple occasions in the quarter.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Junior Amirah Hackney scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Nittany Lions.  Hackney also had a team-high three steals on defense.
 
* Sophomore Xenia Gillis recorded a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
* Washington finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.
 
* Seniors Naila Newman and Nia Newman each totaled seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
 
* For Brandywine, Loper scored a team-high 18 points, while Rayne Manson finished with 10 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2012-13 season.  Abington is now 3-1 in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 9 as the Nittany Lions host Arcadia University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
