Abington Drops United East Doubleheader at Berks

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at Penn State Berks on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Softball Field.  Berks won game one by the score of 5-0 and then took game two, 10-3, in five innings.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Berks' Paige Brightwell held the Abington offense to just one hit as she earned her fourth win of the season, while striking out 12 batters.  
 
* Laurel Zubler drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning to give Berks a 1-0 lead.  Zubler drove in another run in the fourth during a three-run inning.
 
* Berks capped the scoring in the sixth when Maura Gorman drove in Alexa Burkey with a base hit.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Lainey Scotese had Abington's lone hit.  Scotese led off the fifth inning with a single through the left side to break up Brightwell's no-hit bid.
 
* For Berks, Zubler went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Lauren Ziegler finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington grabbed a 3-1 lead after scoring three runs in the top-half of the fourth inning.  Freshman Riley Logan highlighted the inning with a two-run single.
 
* In the bottom of the fourth, Berks erupted for nine runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead heading into the fifth inning.  Anna Laughlin had a two-run double in the inning.
 
* After Abington was retired in the top half of the fifth the game was called due to rain and lightning in the area.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Logan finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI, while freshman Morgan Craig drove in the team's other run during the three-run fourth inning.
 
* Junior Jill Thomas was 1-for-2 with a double. Seniors Hailey Gamble and Gretchen Yanss also had hits in the game as both finished 1-for-3.
 
* For Berks, Laughlin finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Peyton Vivian went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Mallory Duff won her fourth game of the year after pitching four innings and striking out two.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 55th and 56th matchups between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 10-46 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 4 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
