Abington Falls to Seahawks in United East Semifinals

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team saw its magical season come to an end as the third-seeded Nittany Lions fell short against second-seeded St. Mary's College, 4-1, in the United East Conference (UEC) semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at the Somerset Tennis Complex.  Abington concludes the year 12-3 marking the most wins in a season since winning 11 matches in the 2014-15 season.  The 12 victories are also the second most wins in a single season in the program's Division III era. The 2012-13 team won 13 matches that season.

How It Happened
 
* Abington opened the match earning the team point in doubles competition.  The duo of sophomores Wenxu Gu and Tripp Mangifesta defeated Jacob Nelson and Nick Rohr, 6-2, for their seventh doubles win of the season at first flight.
 
* At second doubles, sophomore Anton Labas and freshman Krishna Gurram clinched the point for the Nittany Lions with a 7-5 triumph over Andrew Hand and Alex Lyman.  Gurram and Labas were up 3-1 before St. Mary's rallied to take a 5-4 lead.  However, the Abington duo was able to tie the match and go on to win the next two games for a 7-5 victory to secure the team point.
 
* In singles play, sophomore Wenxu Gu won the first set against Rohr at first flight by the score of 6-4.  Gu was leading 3-0 in the second set when the match was called.
 
* St. Mary's earned team points with victories at second, third, fifth and sixth singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2021-22 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-6 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were making their 12th appearance in the postseason since joining Division III.  Abington is now 8-11 all-time in the United East Tournament (formerly NEAC).
 
Record Setting Season
Abington opened the season 8-0 tying the longest winning streak in the program's Division III era.  The 12 victories this year mark the second most by the program since joining D-III.  As beforehand mentioned, the Nittany Lions won 13 matches in 2012-13.  In addition, the team's three setbacks are the fewest by the team since 2014-15 when the team finished 11-4.
