Abington Falls to Seahawks in United East Championships

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington baseball team saw its season come to an end after falling two games to none in a best of three Second Round series in the United East Conference (UEC) Championships at St. Mary's College (Md.) on Friday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest. The third-seeded Seahawks defeated the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions by the score of 8-2 and 10-7.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington scored its two runs in the opening frame when senior Jake Fallers delivered a double to right field scoring both junior Cory DiMario and senior Gaetan Grandelli.  Both DiMario and Grandelli reached on base hits.
 
* St. Mary's cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second after a run scoring hit by Rhett Fletcher. Three innings later the Seahawks scored two runs to grab their first lead of the game at 3-2.  Trevor Smith drove in the go-ahead run with a single down the left field line.
 
* The Seahawks added two runs in the seventh after a two-run homer by Ian Walters to make the score 5-2. St. Mary's tacked on three more runs in the eighth after taking advantage of two fielding errors by the Nittany Lions.
 
Inside the Box (Game 1)
 
* Fallers finished the game 4-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
 
* Redshirt-junior Garrett Garofalo also had a double in the game as he went 1-for-2 with a walk.
 
* Sophomore James Torpey (4-4) went 6.2 innings for the Nittany Lions allowing just three earned runs while striking out six batters.
 
* For the Seahawks, Ryder Chalk went the distance to earn his sixth win of the season. Chalk allowed two runs and scattered seven hits in nine innings of work while striking out six. Walters went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* The Nittany Lions had to play catch up in game two as the Seahawks led 8-0 through the first four innings.  Abington finally got on the board in the fifth after back-to-back run scoring hits by DiMario and senior Shane Fillman.  Fillman drove in a pair with a double down the left field line.
 
* In the bottom of the fifth the Seahawks got two of the runs back when Aaron Wathen and George Berbakos each drove in a run to make the score 10-3.
 
* Abington cut the Seahawks' lead to five with two runs in the sixth inning.  DiMario drove in a pair with a two-out single to left field. The Nittany Lions added another two runs in the eighth to make the score 10-7.  Fillman drew a bases loaded walk to force home Garofalo and then Grandelli drove in junior Paul Figueroa with a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
* In the top half of the ninth, Abington had the potential tying run at the plate after Garofalo and sophomore Zach DiMario drew one out walks.  However, St. Mary's Anthony Walsh struck out the next two batters to close out the game and record his first save of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* C. DiMario finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
 
* Fillman also had multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI. 
 
* Garofalo scored three runs in the game.
 
* Senior Nate Evans pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while sophomore Derek Aub threw a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
 
* For the Seahawks, Berbakos went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Corey Brown finished 2-for-5 as well with three RBI. Jordan Bonhoff earned his first win of the season after going 5.1 innings.  He struck out nine and allowed three earned runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th and 15th match-ups between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2022 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-8 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were making their 13th postseason appearance and ninth straight.  Abington is now 15-24 all-time in the United East Championships.
