Abington Falls to Berks in Second Round of Postseason

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team's run in the United East Conference (UEC) Championships came to an end on Friday as the Nittany Lions fell two games to none in the Second Round of a best of three game series to top-seeded Penn State Berks.  Berks defeated Abington by the scores of 6-0 and 2-0.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Berks jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Peyton Vivian drove in Haylie Mauger in the first inning with a double.  Berks doubled its lead with another run in the second to take a 2-0 advantage.
 
* After scoring another run in the fourth, Berks pushed across two runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Jaredis Flores highlighted the inning with a run scoring double.
 
* Berks capped the scoring in the sixth when Vivian drove in her second run of the game to make the score 6-0.
 
* Abington's best chance to score came in the top half of the sixth when the Nittany Lions had runners on second and third with two outs.  Seniors Hailey Gamble and Gretchen Yanss each drew walks in the inning to reach base.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Junior Jill Thomas had a pair of hits in the game as she went 2-for-3.
 
* Gamble, Yanss and senior Callie Chambers also had hits in the game.
 
* Yanss struck out five batters in six innings of work.
 
* For Berks, Vivian finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, Paige Brightwell (12-4) picked up her 12th victory of the season.  Brightwell held Abington to just five hits in seven innings while striking out four.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Vivian pushed across the only runs in the game for Berks with a pair of RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
 
* Abington had a chance in the fourth to break the scoreless tie but left two runners stranded in scoring position.  Yanss and sophomore Lainey Scotese led the inning off with back-to-back singles.  Sophomore Morgan Craig dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. 
 
* In the seventh, Chambers brought the potential tying run to the plate with a one-out single.  Brightwell entered in relief of Mallory Duff after the hit.  On her second pitch she retired Abington with a ground out double play to end the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
*  Scotese finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of base hits.
 
* Freshman Jess Dinardo pitched four scoreless innings holding Berks to just two hits while striking out two. 
 
* Yanss went 1-for-3 at the plate and entered in relief as she pitched the final two innings.
 
* For Berks, Duff (9-3) earned the win marking her ninth of the season as she went 6.1 with four strikeouts.  Brightwell entered in the seventh and recorded the final two outs for her third save of the season.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 57th and 58th match-ups between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 10-48 against Berks in the all-time series. 
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were making their 12th appearance in the United East Championships as the team has qualified for the postseason every year since 2013.  Abington is now 13-20 in the conference championships.
