Abington Splits at PSU-Berks Tri-Match

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches in a tri-match hosted by Penn State Berks on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center.  Abington defeated Berks, 3-0, before falling to Marywood University by the same score.

How It Happened vs. Berks
 
* Abington trailed 8-2 early in the set but went on to use a 10-4 run to tie the score at 12-12.  Junior Zayna Jamaladdin recorded back-to-back kills to cap the run.  The Nittany Lions trailed again at 16-13 but another surge overcame the deficit.  Abington ripped off seven straight points, including 10 of the next 11 to grab a 23-17 lead.  Berks halted the run with two points, but two straight kills from sophomore Ellie Van Otten and Jamaladdin clinched the set at 25-19.
 
* In the second set Abington opened with an 8-1 run and never looked back.  The Nittany Lions broke the set wide open when leading 10-4 went on an 11-1 run to grab its biggest lead of the set at 21-5. Junior Kayla Mason recorded match-point with a kill for the 25-13 win.
 
* Abington used a later run to close out the match with a third set victory.  Trailing 16-15, Abington went on a 7-1 run to take a 22-17 lead.  Berks responded with three straight points to cut the lead to 22-20, however Abington followed with two points of its own to set up match point at 24-20.  After another two points for Berks, Jamaladdin recorded her 13th kill of the match to secure the 25-22 victory.
 
Inside the Box Score vs. Berks
 
* Jamaladdin and Van Otten combined for 24 of the team's 35 kills in the match.  Jamaladdin finished with a match-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs, while Van Otten totaled 11 kills and eight digs.
 
* Sophomore Angel Morales recorded a match-high 19 digs.
 
* Junior Ryenn Mamrosch totaled 26 assists while also recording eight digs.
 
* Mason and freshman Maya Giles each had five kills.
 
* For Berks, Madelyn Caris totaled 13 kills and 14 digs, while Libby Swoyer recorded a match-high 27 assists to go along with nine digs.
 
All-Time Series vs. Berks
Today marked the 15th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 5-10 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Inside the Box Score vs. Marywood
 
* Jamaladdin led the team with 11 kills, while Van Otten and Giles each added five kills.
 
* Mamrosch totaled 25 assists and seven digs.
 
* Morales finished with a team-high 12 digs, while senior Morgan Schaefer totaled nine digs.
 
* For Marywood, Genevieve Pollock totaled a match-high 18 kills, while Ayla Bransford finished with a match-high 41 assists. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Marywood.  The Nittany Lions defeated Marywood, 3-0, last year at the Abington Athletic Building.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 as the Nittany Lions host Wilkes University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
