Abington Wins Two at Brandywine Tri-Match

Media, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team won both its matches as the Nittany Lions took part in a tri-match hosted by Penn State Brandywine on Saturday.  Abington defeated Bryn Mawr College, 3-1, and then shutout Brandywine by the score of 3-0.

How It Happened vs. Bryn Mawr
 
* After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Nittany Lions bounced back with a victory in set number two.  Abington led 13-12 and used a 4-1 run to pull ahead of the Owls thanks to four kills by junior Zayna Jamaladdin.  The Owls cut the score to 17-15 but Abington responded with four straight points to increase its lead to 21-15 before taking the set, 25-20.  Freshman Maya Giles sealed the victory with a kill ending a mini 3-0 run by the Owls.
 
* Abington cruised past Bryn Mawr the rest of the match.  In the third set the team jumped out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back.  Freshman Shelleece Genaille recorded five of her season-high eight aces in the set, including four straight when the score was 12-3.  The Nittany Lions held the Owls to just four kills on their way to a 25-10 victory.
 
* The fourth set nearly mimicked the third as Abington scored the first nine points of the set. The defense once again held the Bryn Mawr attackers to only four kills in the entire set.  The Nittany Lions took the set, 25-11.

* Abington made nine errors in the first set and then totaled a combined four errors on 89 total attacks the next three sets while recording 37 kills.  The Nittany Lions finished the match with 48 kills and an impressive .289 attack percentage for the match.
 
* Jamaladdin recorded her third straight 20-plus kills performance as she set a career-high with 23 kills to lead the match.  She finished with a .405 attack percentage.
 
* Sophomore Angel Morales finished with a match-high 18 digs.
 
* Genaille tied her season-high with eight aces to go along with 12 assists and five digs.
 
* Junior Ryenn Mamrosch led the team with 22 assists and totaled 13 digs.
 
* Sophomore Ellie Van Otten finished the match with nine kills.
 
* For Bryn Mawr, Emma Loller and Elise Perry each had nine kills, while Micah Sheppard led the team with 13 digs.
 
All-Time Series vs. Bryn Mawr
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Bryn Mawr since the start of the 2013 season. The Nittany Lions are now 5-4 versus the Owls in the all-times series.
 
How It Happened vs. Brandywine
 
* The momentum carried over into the next match as Abington opened with a 16-2 run, including a stretch of 10 straight points. Abington finished the set with 13 kills with Jamaladdin (6) and junior Kayla Mason (4) accounting for 10 of them.  The Nittany Lions won the first set, 25-10.
 
* In a more competitive second set, Abington trailed late after a 4-0 run by Brandywine made the score 16-15.  However, Abington responded with a 6-0 run to regain the lead.  Jamaladdin recorded a point in five of the six points in the run with three aces and two kills.  With the score set at 22-19, Abington recorded the final three points with Mamrosch and Van Otten recording kills between an attack error by Brandywine.
 
* Abington once again trailed late but like the second set just by one point.  With Brandywine ahead 19-18, Abington sealed the match scoring seven of the final eight points, including four straight to end the match.  Van Otten recorded a kill and junior Brynn Atkins notched an ace before back-to-back attack errors by Brandywine closed things out. Abington took the set, 25-20.

* Jamaladdin led the match with 12 kills to go along with eight digs and four aces. 
 
* Morales finished with a match-high 15 digs while totaling three aces.
 
* Mason added eight kills on 11 total attacks without making an error.  She finished with a .727 attack percentage.
 
* Mamrosch recorded a match-high 20 assists and also totaled five digs.
 
* Genaille had 10 assists to go along with four aces and seven digs.
 
* For Brandywine, Shayla Howell led the team with seven kills, while Emma O'Reilly totaled a team-high 12 digs.
 
All-Time Series vs. Brandywine
Today marked just the fifth meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 4-1 versus Brandywine in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle for the next 12 days and will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 18 as the Nittany Lions host Saint Elizabeth University in a non-conference contest. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
