Late Run Pushes Abington Past Seahawks

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team used an 11-3 run in the final four minutes of the game to put away St. Mary's College (Md.), 68-59, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.

How It Happened
 
* Abington led 57-56 at the 4:37 mark after St. Mary's Khairi Hyde made it a one-point game after converting a three-point play with a free throw.  However, the Nittany Lions answered scoring on their next three possessions resulting in a 6-0 run to increase the lead to 63-56.  A basket by junior K'Mari Smith gave Abington its biggest lead of the game to that point with 2:35 left on the clock.
 
* The Abington defense held St. Mary's to just a three-point basket the final 4:13 of regulation capping the game with an 11-3 run.
 
* The Nittany Lions gained possession of the lead for the final time when senior JoJo Kelly drilled a three-pointer to break a 51-51 tie with less than seven minutes to play.

* Kelly led all scorers with 20 points (7-14 FG) to go along with seven rebounds.
 
* Sophomore Tyler Meinel finished with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Meinel also totaled six rebounds and blocked three shots.
 
* Junior Tyler Fox also scored in double-figures as he added 12 points.
 
* Smith finished with six points and a team-high nine rebounds, while junior Tamir Powell added eight points.
 
* For St. Mary's, James Crimaudo recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Hyde finished with 12 points and eight boards.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2018-19 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-6 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 13 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Salisbury University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
