Abington Falls to Cairn in United East Action

Abington, Pa. –  The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) contest against Cairn University by the score of 104-83 on Wednesday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Junior Tyler Fox gave Abington a 28-27 lead after hitting a jumper at the 6:42 mark of the first half.  However, the Highlanders answered with a 9-0 run to lead 36-28 with less than four minutes to play until halftime.  Cairn pushed its lead to double-digits at 45-35 before taking a 48-39 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* Early in the second half, the Highlanders increased its lead to 17 points (58-41).  The Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to single digits on four separate occasions with the latter coming with less than nine minutes to play.  Junior Tamir Powell completed a three-point play with a free throw to make the score 76-69. 
 
* Over the next five minutes, the Highlanders used an 18-4 run to put the game out of reach.  Corey Baldwin scored a basket to make the score 94-73 with only 4:18 to play in regulation. Cairn led by as many as 26 points (104-78) before game's end.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior JoJo Kelly led the Nittany Lions with a team-high 21 points (7-15 FG) to go along with five rebounds.
 
* Sophomore Tyler Meinel recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
* Fox finished the game with 17 points and five rebounds.
 
* Junior K'Mari Smith also scored in double-figures as he totaled 11 points.
 
* Powell added nine points and four rebounds.
 
* For Cairn, Ron Ayers scored a game-high 22 points, while Jaylon Simpson finished the game with 21 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2012-13 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 6-6 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 as the Nittany Lions host nationally ranked No. 6 University of Mary Washington in a non-conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
