Abington Edged by Patriots in Overtime

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team fell short in overtime against the University of Valley Forge by the score of 82-81 in United East Conference action on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington overcame a 10-point second half deficit after trailing 48-38 early in the half.  The Nittany Lions chipped away at the lead and grabbed its first advantage in the second half after sophomore Tyler Meinel scored a layup to give the Nittany Lions a 62-61 lead midway through.
 
* Valley Forge regained the lead and pushed the score to 69-64 with less than seven minutes remaining.  The Nittany Lions answered with a quick 5-0 run to tie the game at 69-69 after senior JoJo Kelly scored a basket with five minutes to play.
 
* Kelly came through with a key three-pointer down the stretch to break a 71-71 tie with 1:20 left on the clock to give Abington a 74-71 advantage.  Valley Forge responded with four unanswered points to regain the lead at 75-74 with only :21 seconds remaining.
 
* Junior K'Mari Smith tied the game at 75-75 with seven seconds left after splitting a pair of free throws.  The Abington defense made a stop on the ensuing possession to force overtime.
 
* In overtime, the Patriots scored off the tip to lead 77-75 and never trailed.  Valley Forge held a four-point lead (81-77) at the 1:35 mark before Kelly came through with another big three to make it a one-point game at 81-80. 
 
* Meinel tied the game at 81-81 after splitting a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play.  Two possessions later, Valley Forge broke the tie after William Lawder split his free throws to make the score 82-81.  After a timeout, Abington was able to get off a shot to potentially win the game but the shot fell short as the final horn sounded.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Four players scored in double-figures for the Nittany Lions.  Kelly led the way with 20 points to go along with a game-high 12 boards to record his first double-double of the season.
 
* Meinel finished with a season-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field.  He also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots to go along with three steals.
 
* Junior Tyler Fox finished with 18 points; one shy of his season-high.
 
* Smith filled the box score with 13 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
 
* Junior Tamir Powell recorded eight rebounds.
 
* For Valley Forge, Lawder recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Isaiah Reece led the team with 15 points and eight boards.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the third meeting between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2024-25 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 versus the Patriots in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 10 as the Nittany Lions travel to Maryland to take on St. Mary's College in a United East contest.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
