Abington Opens Season at Shenandoah

Winchester, Va. – The Penn State Abington baseball team opened the 2026 season with a non-conference doubleheader on the road against Shenandoah University on Saturday.  The Nittany Lions were defeated by the Hornets, 9-4 and 14-4, in the two games.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener, a five-run fourth inning turned out to be the difference in the game.  Already leading 4-1 entering the inning, the Hornets increased their lead to 9-1 after plating five runs in the frame.  The home squad took advantage of a bases loaded situation early in the inning with three batters recording run scoring hits.
 
* Abington added three runs in the top half of the ninth inning with juniors Domenic Lotruglio and Nathan Schurga each driving in a run. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Junior Donato Incollingo went 2-for-4 at the plate while scoring a pair of runs. 
 
* Junior Akira Nakamura finished 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
 
* Freshman Jason Handfield pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in his collegiate debut.  Handfield finished with three strikeouts while allowing just two hits.
 
* For Shenandoah, JP Williams went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Tyler Smith finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, Incollingo launched his first home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the top half of the second inning. 
 
* Shenandoah regained the lead in the bottom of the second with a single run and then tacked on three runs in both the third and fourth innings to hold a 8-1 advantaged through four innings.
 
* Senior Zach Bauers gave the Nittany Lions a run in the sixth when he connected on his first home run in an Abington uniform.  Abington added two more runs in the eighth when junior Andrew Holt delivered a two-run double. 
 
* The Hornets walked the game off in the bottom of the eighth after scoring three times to initiate the 10-run mercy rule.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Holt finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBI. 
 
* Incollingo and Bauers each went 1-for-3 with a solo home run.
 
* For Shenandoah, Jaime Padilla went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI, while Carl Keenan went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the second and third matchups between Abington and Shenandoah since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 versus the Hornets in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Eastern University in a non-conference contest.  First pitch is scheduled for a 3 p.m.
