Abington Falls to Seahawks in United East Finals

Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team saw its historic season come to an end after falling to top-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.), 73-44, in the United East Conference (UEC) championship game on Saturday at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.  The third-seeded Nittany Lions finished their season with a 20-7 record marking the program's second 20-win campaign in the Division III era.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening quarter as the Nittany Lions' defense held St. Mary's without a field goal until the midway mark. However, the Seahawks chipped away at the double-digit lead and by quarters the Abington lead was at 14-11.
 
* In the second quarter both teams battled back-and-forth but it was Abington that was on the leading end of the score by halftime with a 28-27 advantage. 
 
* St. Mary's flipped the game in the third quarter as the Seahawks used a 21-2 run the first seven-plus minutes of the new quarter to take an 18-point lead at 48-30.  St. Mary's outscored the Nittany Lions, 24-5, in the quarter to lead 51-33 entering the final frame.
 
* Abington was able to cut the deficit down to 12 points after a layup by senior Naila Newman made the score 53-41 with 6:55 remaining in regulation.  However, the Seahawks used a quick 11-2 run to put the game out of reach.  St. Mary's led 64-43 after hitting on four straight free throws at the 3:31 mark.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Junior Amirah Hackney finished with a team-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.
 
* Junior Amina Reid also scored in double-figures as she totaled 10 points.  She also had three steals on defense. Reid finished the season with 96 steals setting a new single season record that she established last season.
 
* Naila Newman finished the game with eight points.
 
* For St. Mary's, Marley Saunders and Samantha Blaylock combined for 52 points off the bench.  Saunders finished with a game-high 32 points (10-13 FG | 6-9 3FG), while Blaylock totaled 20 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2021-22 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-4 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
Abington was appearing in its eighth United East (formerly NEAC) tournament. The Nittany Lions are now 10-7 in the postseason with three appearances in the championship game (2015, 2024 & 2026).
 
20-Win Season
The Nittany Lions recorded their second 20-win season in the program's Division III era.  It's the most victories in a single season since 2014-15 when the team won 22 games.  In addition, the Nittany Lions won 11 straight games leading into the United East championship game setting a new D-III era program record.
