Abington Sweeps Day Two of Spring Trip

Little River, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team outscored its opponents 22-7 in a pair of non-conference contests on day two of the team's spring trip at the Fastpitch Spring Games on Tuesday down in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Nittany Lions started the day with a 12-4 triumph against Hilbert College and then defeated King's College, 10-3.

How It Happened (vs. Hilbert)
 
* Abington scored a combined nine runs the final three innings to pull away from the Hawks.  The Nittany Lions led 3-2 entering the fifth inning before scoring a trio runs in the next three frames.  Senior Jill Thomas highlighted the fifth with a two-run triple with two outs in the inning to make it a 6-2 game. In the sixth, junior Marlena Hacker delivered a two-triple to left field before scoring on a double by junior Lainey Scotese.  With a 9-2 lead, Abington added another three runs in the seventh to pad its lead by eight runs. Freshman Candice Peck and junior Isabella Antosiewicz each drove in a run in the inning.

* Peck went an impressive 5-for-5 at the plate, including three base hits, one double and one triple.  Her five hits are the most in a game since Abbi Long had seven against Wells College in 2022.  Peck's five runs scored are also the most since Mary Kate Smith scored six times in the same game Long had her hits record against Wells.
 
* Hacker finished the game 3-for-4 to go along with four RBI. Her sixth inning triple marked her 11th of her career.
 
* Thomas went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Antosiewicz finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
 
* Junior Paula Casale (1-1) went the distance for the Nittany Lions as she allowed just two earned runs in seven innings of work to register her first win of the season.
 
* For Hilbert, Emma Gionta went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Shelby Schimek went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Hilbert and the first since 2018.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-1 versus the Hawks in the short all-time series.
 
How It Happened (vs. King's)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 3-0 in the top half of the first inning against the Monarchs.  Peck recorded her sixth straight hit on the day with a leadoff double.  Two batters later, Hacker tripled to left field to score Peck for the game's first run.  Scotese followed with a run scoring double and later scored on a bases loaded walk by freshman Marisa Maehrer to cap the scoring in the inning.
 
* In the bottom of the second, King's matched Abington's three runs with a three-run frame.  Megan Matsko highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.
 
* In the fourth, the Abington offense exploded for six runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead.  The Nittany Lions recorded six hits in the inning and took advantage of a Monarch's error late in the inning.  Thomas drove in two runs in the inning with Hacker and Maehrer each having run scoring hits.
 
* Abington tacked on a run in the seventh after Antosiewicz hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Maehrer.

* Antosiewicz finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Between the two games, she had three successful sacrifice hits and two sacrifice flies.
 
* Hacker went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.  Her first inning triple was her second on the day and 12th of her career. She's now tied for third all-time with former standout Greta Sheridan (2015-16).
 
* Peck went 2-for-5 with a run scored as she finished her day 7-for-10 at the plate.
 
* Scotese recorded three hits in the game (3-for-5) to go along with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Sophomore Jess Dinardo (1-0) earned her first win of the season as she held the Monarchs to just five hits in a seven-inning complete game performance.  Dinardo allowed only two earned runs and struck out a pair of batters.
 
* For King's, Kara Krouse went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Matsko finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and King's since the start of the 2017 season. The Nittany Lions are now 1-2 versus the Monarchs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will resume play on Thursday, March 12 as the Nittany Lions continue their spring trip against Mitchell College (11 a.m.) and SUNY Canton (3 p.m.)
