Abington Continues to Roll; Wins Ninth Straight

Auburndale, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team won its ninth straight game after defeating Penn State Altoona, 9-6, in a non-conference contest on Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida.

How It Happened
 
* Abington flipped the script in the top half of the seventh inning with a five-run frame.  The Nittany Lions trailed 5-4 entering the inning but by inning's end held a 9-5 advantage for its first lead since the first inning. Senior Zach Bauers gave Abington a 6-5 lead with an early two-run home run.  Later in the inning the Nittany Lions added two more scores taking advantage of miscues by the Altoona defense.  Junior Mike Brocco capped the scoring with a two-out run scoring hit to make the score 9-5.
 
* Altoona got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Jonathan Rauch connected on a solo home run.

* Junior Zachary Dennis held the Altoona offense scoreless in his two-inning relief appearance.  Dennis struck out two batters and didn't allow a single hit on his way to his second save of the season.
 
* Abington jumped out to a 3-0 lead as the first four batters of the game reached base.  Freshman Jaxon Horvath highlighted the inning with a two-run base hit.  Earlier in the inning, freshman John Busco drove in the game's first run with a single to left.
 
* In the bottom of the first, Altoona answered with three runs as well to tie the game. Owen Dombrosky hit a two-run triple and then scored on a double by Zach Ingold. Altoona grabbed a 5-3 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. 
 
* Abington made it a one-run game in the sixth after sophomore Aqual Chapman doubled to left to score Horvath.  The Nittany Lions then followed with a five-run seventh inning.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Bauers and Busco each had multiple hits in the game.  Bauers finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, including his second home run of the season.  Busco went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
 
* Horvath drove in a pair of runs as he finished the game 1-for-3 with a walk.
 
* Sophomore Will Devine (2-1) picked up his second win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings of relief.  He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out two.
 
* For Altoona, Jonathan Rauch went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Dombrosky finished 1-for-4 with three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Altoona since the start of the 2013 season and the first 2018.  Abington is now 3-7 versus Altoona in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington wraps up its spring trip on Saturday, March 14 as the Nittany Lions face Wesleyan University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 3:45 p.m.
