Abington Overpowers Highlanders in United East Clash

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team combined for 36 runs and 33 hits in a pair of blowout victories against visiting Cairn University on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.  The Nittany Lions took the opener of the United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader with a 13-3 win and followed with a 23-7 triumph in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* Cairn got on the board first with a three-run second inning as three different batters drove in runs.  The score remained that way until the fifth when the Abington offense batted around and pushed five runners across to score to take its first lead of the game at 5-3.  Junior Akira Nakamura highlighted the inning with a two-run single, while junior Donato Incollingo led the inning off with a double and later drew a walk in the frame.
 
* The Nittany Lion offense added to the lead with three runs in the fifth to make the score 8-3.  Senior Benjamin Gagnon drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Nakamura registered his second two-run hit in as many innings.
 
* Abington tacked on a run in the sixth as Gagnon's run scoring single increased the lead to 9-3.  An inning later, Gagnon capped a four-run seventh with a two-run single that resulted in a walk-off win for the Nittany Lions as the conference's 10-run mercy rule went into effect with Abington ahead 13-3.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gagnon went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate as he drove in a season-high five runs.  He also scored a run and recorded a sacrifice fly in the win.
 
* Nakamura also had a four-hit game as he went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
 
* Sophomore John Marcucci went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Incollingo finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Freshman John Busco reached base three times after drawing three walks, while junior Andrew Holt finished 1-for-2 with two walks.  Holt also scored three runs.

* Junior James Torpey improved to 3-0 as he earned the win. He went four innings in the seven inning game and struck out a pair of batters.  

* Junior Jack Wright picked up his second save of the season after pitching three scoreless innings in relief.  Wright held the Highlanders to just one hit and struck out three.
 
* As a team, Abington reached base nine times via walks to just three by the Cairn offense.
 
* For Cairn, AJ Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Christian Spadea finished 2-for-3.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)

* The Abington offense remained hot entering game two as the Nittany Lions scored five runs in the opening inning. The team batted around while collecting five hits in the inning.  Marcucci came through with a three-run double to cap the scoring.
 
* Incollingo made the score 6-1 in the second with a run scoring double. 
 
* Abington broke the game wide open in the third as 12 runners came across to score. Incollingo hit a grand slam in the inning and then later Busco connected with a three-run shot.  By inning's end the Nittany Lions' offense increased their lead to 18-1.
 
* Abington hit the 20-run mark in the fourth after freshman Zach Salsbery hit a two-run homer over the center field fence.  The Nittany Lions added three more runs in the sixth for a season-high 23 runs.  Juniors Mike Brocco and Daniel Lamlamay each had a sacrifice fly in the inning.
 
* Cairn scored five runs in the fifth inning with Matthew Urena coming through with a two-run single. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Senior Nick Benson (3-2) had more than enough run support on his way to his third win of the season.  Benson allowed just one earned run in four innings while striking out eight.  He fanned the first four batters he faced in the game.
 
* Incollingo drove in a career-high six runs after going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs score.  His third inning long ball marked the 18th of his career and as a result moved into fifth place among the program's all-time home run leaders.  In addition, Incollingo's six RBI increased his career total to 96.  He's four RBI shy of becoming just the seventh player to hit the 100 career RBI mark.
 
* Busco finished 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI as he connected with his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the third inning.
 
* Nakamura went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI as he finished the day with a combined seven hits and six RBI. 
 
* Marcucci tied his season-high with three RBI after going 1-for-2 at the plate.
 
* Gagnon reached base with three walks. 
 
* Salsbery's pinch-hit homer was his second long ball of the season as he went 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Junior Aaron Clark pitched two innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit.  Clark struck out four of the six batters he faced.
 
* For Cairn, Cameron Burnes went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI after hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning. Jake Murnock finished 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th and 12th matchups between Abington and Cairn since the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 6-6 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 as the Nittany Lions host Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
