Abington Falls to Brandywine in United East Doubleheader

Aston, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader against Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday afternoon at Maple Zone. Brandywine took the opener, 9-1, in six innings and won game two by the score of 4-0.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Brandywine broke up a 0-0 deadlock with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The home team Lions scored on a wild pitch and on a sacrifice fly by Shelby DeCillis to take a 2-0 lead.
 
* Abington cut the Brandywine lead in half getting a run back in the top half of the fifth.  Junior Lainey Scotese led the inning off with the team's first hit of the game.  Freshman Tori Colagreco dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Scotese to third.  Freshman Candice Peck stepped to the plate a delievered a double to left to drive in Scotese to make the score 2-1.
 
* In the bottom of the fifth, Brandywine extended its lead to 6-1.  Ava Craddock highlighted the inning with a two-run double.  In the sixth, Brandywine 'walked off' with a 9-1 victory after scoring three more runs.  Madie Culbertson drove in the team's ninth run of the game to force the eight-run mercy rule.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

* Peck had the team's lone extra-base hit as she finished 1-for-2 with an RBI double. 
 
* Scotese went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
 
* Juniors Isabella Antosiewicz and Marlena Hacker each had a hit in the game.
 
* Junior Paula Casale was pitcher of record for Abington as she went 4.1 innings allowing only one hit and zero unearned runs.  Casale had two strikeouts in the game.
 
* For Brandywine, Culbertson went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Kaylee Mushinski finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. April Lewandowski won her fifth game of the season allowing just one run in six innings while striking out eight.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, a two-run second inning turned out to be the difference in the game.  Brandywine jumped ahead 2-0 after back-to-back run scoring hits.  Culbertson drove in a run with a triple down the left field line and then scored on a double by DeCillis. 
 
* Brandywine added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings with DeCillis having a hand on both.  In the fourth, she forced in a run after reaching on an error and then in the sixth had a run scoring single to make the score 4-0.
 
* Olivia Bowers held the Abington offense to five hits while only allowing two runners reach second base.  She struck out four on her way to her second win of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Peck finished the game 2-for-3 with a double; her second of the doubleheader.
 
* Sophomore Ella McDonough went 1-for-2 , while Antosiewicz and Hacker each went 1-for-3.
 
* For Brandywine, DeCillis went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Craddock went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.  Isabella Hurta pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief and struck out three batters.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second doubleheader between Abington and Brandywine with the first-ever meeting coming last season.  Abington is now 0-4 versus Brandywine in the team's Division III era.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 4 as the Nittany Lions host Notre Dame of Maryland University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 1 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
