Abington Sweeps Rosemont in Non-Conference Doubleheader

King of Prussia, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep at Rosemont College in a pair of non-conference contests on Friday evening at Heuser Park.  The Nittany Lions won the opener, 7-4, and took the night cap by the score of 7-5.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* In the opener, Rosemont jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning.  Isaac Bugman and Caiden Spinelli recorded back-to-back run scoring hits with two outs in the frame.
 
* The score remained 2-0 until the third when a pair of home runs by the Nittany Lions gave Abington its first lead of the game at 3-2.  Freshman Zach Salsbery tied the game with a two-run shot and later in the inning, junior Nathan Schurga gave the Nittany Lions the lead with a solo home run.
 
* Rosemont regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Terrell Robinson and Tim Shell each drove in a run in the inning to make it a 4-3 game.
 
* Abington once again tied the game.  This time, junior Akira Nakamura drove in the game tying run with a double in the fifth inning. Two innings later, Abington regained the lead thanks to a three-run blast by junior Donato Incollingo to make the score 7-4. 
 
* In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Matt Avery retired the Ravens in order to complete his four-inning relief appearance.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

* Incollingo recorded his conference leading 14th home run of the season as he finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.  His 14 home runs this year rank third most for homers in a single season. Incollingo has hit atleast one home run in his last four games and has totaled five in that span with six home runs and 16 RBI.
 
* Salsbery finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.  His third inning home run marked his third of the season.

* Schurga went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, including his first home run in an Abington uniform.
 
* For Rosemont, Spinelli finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Tahj Wilson went 2-for-2 with a run.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)

* Abington struck first in the night cap as the Nittany Lions scored three first inning runs.  After a leadoff walk by sophomore John Marcucci, Nakamura delivered a run scoring triple for the game's first run.  Incollingo followed with a sacrifice fly to double Abington's lead at 2-0.  Later in the inning, Benjamin Gagnon scored on a fielding error after reaching base with a base hit.
 
* Abington added to its lead later in the game with two runs in the fifth.  Senior Garrett Garofalo highlighted the frame with a run scoring double. 
 
* The Nittany Lions added a run in the sixth after Gagnon drove in a run with a two-out base hit to make the score 6-0. 
 
* In the bottom of the sixth, Rosemont finally got on the board with two runs after Joe Bentivengna drove in a pair with a double.
 
* Junior TJ Coyne gave Abington a 7-2 lead with a two-out run scoring hit in the top half of the seventh. 
 
* Abington's two runs in the sixth and seventh came in handy as the Ravens scored three in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Zachary Dennis entered with one out in the inning.  He forced a groundout against his first batter that resulted in a force play at the plate.  After hitting a batter that pushed across a run, Dennis retired the final batter of the inning with a flyout to right field to earn his third save of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

* Gagnon finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and two runs and an RBI.

* Marcucci scored twice in the win and had an RBI as he drew a pair of walks.
 
* Junior Domenic Lotruglio went 1-for-1 at the plate with two walks and two runs scored.

* Senior Evan Hughes made his first start of the season and went 5.2 innings allowing just one run.  Hughes finished with a season-high six strikeouts.
 
* For Rosemont, Ryan Bowman went 3-for-5, while Bentivegna finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the second and third matchup between Abington and Rosemont with all three contests coming this season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-0 versus the Ravens.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 18 as the Nittany Lions host St. Mary's College (Md.) in a United East Conference doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 12 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.  Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions will recognize their seven seniors in part of Senior Day festivities.
