Abington Takes Two from Seahawks on Senior Day

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team extended its winning streak to six games after sweeping St. Mary's College (Md.) in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park on Senior Day.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Seahawks by the scores of 13-7 and 11-1. 
 
Prior to the game, Abington honored its senior class with a pregame celebration.  This year's senior class included, Garrett Garofalo, Benjamin Gagnon, Zach DiMario, Evan Hughes, Zach Bauers, Connor Woodson and Nick Benson.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the first by junior Domenic Lotruglio and freshman John Busco jump started a three-run inning by the Nittany Lions. Junior Akira Nakamura and freshman Jaxon Horvath also had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* In the second, Busco gave Abington a 4-0 lead after connecting on his 10th home run of the season; the most by a rookie in program history.
 
* St. Mary's flipped the script in the third and grabbed its first lead of the game with a six-run inning.  Layne Lesko highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
 
* Abington made it a 6-5 game in the bottom of the fourth after junior Donato Incollingo drove in Nakamura with a double.  Nakamura tripled to right to set up Incollingo for a run scoring opportunity.
 
* Two innings later, Abington regained the lead with a pair of runs.  Bauers forced in a run after reaching on an error and later scored after freshman Zach Salsbery drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 7-6 game.
 
* In the top half of the seventh, the Seahawks tied the game at 7-7 after a run scoring single by Kody Atkins.  However, a four-run bottom of the seventh gave Abington an 11-7 advantage.  Horvath highlighted the inning with a two-run double and then scored off a double by Gagnon. 
 
* Abington added two runs in the eighth to make the score 13-7.  Gagnon recorded his second run scoring double, this time driving in two.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

* Busco finished the game 2-for-5 with a season-high five runs scored; one shy of the program's single game record.  He also had two RBI and drew two walks.  His second inning home run marked the 10th of the season as he set a new single season rookie record for most home runs.  Former standout Chase Swain hit nine home runs in his rookie season in 2022.
 
* Nakamura finished 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.

* Gagnon went 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI.
 
* Horvath also drove in three runs as he finished 2-for-4 with a run.
 
* Freshman Jason Handfield (3-0) picked up the win after pitching six innings of relief.  He scattered eight hits and allowed just one run while striking out five batters.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)

* In the latter game, Abington struck first after Salsberry drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field to make the score 2-0.  The game remained that way until the fourth when DJ Sifford led the inning off with a home run to cut the Abington in half at 2-1.
 
* Two innings later the Abington offense opened things up with a five-run frame to take an 7-1 advantage.  Four different players drove in runs, including Nakamura who had a two-run single. 
 
* In the seventh, junior Nathan Schurga drove in the first of four runs in the frame to close out the game.  Nakamura recorded his second two-run base hit in the game before the Nittany Lions 'walked it off' when Bauers drew a bases loaded walk for the team's 11th run of the game.  As a result, the 10-run mercy rule went into effect ending the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Nakamura went 2-for-4 with four RBI.
 
* Bauers reached base four times as he went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI.  He drew three walks in the game.
 
* Gagnon went 2-for-4 with three runs, while Salsbery finished 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI
 
* Schurga finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

* Junior Jack Wright went the distance as he picked up his third win of the season.  Wright scattered eight hits in seven innings while allowing just one run.  He finished the game with four strikeouts.
 
* For St. Mary's, Eli Shafer finished 2-for-4.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 16th and 17th matched ups between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2022 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-8 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington, winners of six straight, returns to action on Tuesday, April 21 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in conference action.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
