Abington Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader to DelVal

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped its final home regular season doubleheader against visiting Delaware Valley University by the scores of 7-1 and 15-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener, the Aggies broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third inning to take the game's first lead.  Madison Donnelly drove in the first run of the inning and then later in the frame, Laila Murray cleared the bases with a three-run double to make the score 4-0.
 
* DelVal increased its lead to 5-0 with a run in the fourth after another run scoring hit by Donnelly.  In the bottom of the inning, Abington got on the board when freshman Tori Colagreco forced home junior Marlena Hacker with a ground ball to second.  Hacker led the inning off with a double for the team's first hit of the game.
 
* The score remained 5-1 until the seventh when the Aggies tacked on two more runs to make it a 7-1 game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Hacker finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and a double.
 
* Junior Lainey Scotese had the team's other hit as she went 1-for-3 with a double.
 
* For DelVal, Donnelly finished 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Murray drove in four runs going 1-for-2 at the plate with a sacrifice fly.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)

* In game two, the Aggies blew the game open with a seven-run third inning.  Leading, 1-0, the DelVal offense sent 12 batters to the plate enroute to a seven-run frame.  Murray highlighted the inning with a two-run hit while Angelina Bresnen reached base twice after leading off by getting hit by a pitch and then later in the inning connecting on a run scoring triple.
 
* The Aggies added five more runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 13-0.  Five different players drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Abington broke up the shutout bid with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Colagreco led the inning off with a double and then scored when Scotese reached on a fielding error by the Aggies' second baseman. 
 
* The Aggies added two more runs in the fifth to cap the scoring for the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Colagreco went 1-for-2 with a run and a double for the Nittany Lions. 
 
* Hacker went 1-for-3 as she finished the double header with two hits. As a result, she is now one hit shy of 100 for her career.  Hacker will become the program's eighth player to reach 100 career hits with her next hit.
 
* For DelVal, Amelia Funston went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, while Murray finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 17th and 18th matchups between Abington and Delaware Valley since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 9-9 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, April 23 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gwynedd Mercy University in the team's final non-conference doubleheader of the season.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
