Abington Edged by Wildcats in United East Second Round

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team saw its season come to an end after coming up short in the Unite East Conference (UEC) Second Round best of three series at third-seeded Penn College on Friday afternoon at the Lumber Yards.  The sixth-seeded Nittany Lions were edged by the Wildcats by the scores of 3-2 and 5-4.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Penn College broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with the game's first two runs.  The Wildcats scored both runs on groundout hits.
 
* Two innings later the Nittany Lions got on the board when senior Emily Foxhill connected on a two-out run scoring double that drove in sophomore Riley Logan.
 
* The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own to increase their lead back to two at 3-1. 
 
* Abington made things interesting in the top half of the seventh. The first three batters all reached base, however the Wildcats' Mackenzi Tice managed to retire the next two batters, including junior Marlena Hacker who had a sacrifice fly that scored freshman Candice Peck to make the score 3-2. Tice struck out the next batter to end the Nittany Lions' potential comeback bid.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Senior Jill Thomas, Logan and Foxhill all finished 1-for-3 in the game.
 
* Sophomore Jess Dinardo (10-10) went the distance as she allowed just two earned runs on four hits while striking out two.
 
* For Penn College, Tice went seven innings and struck out 15 batters.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Nittany Lions opened with a three-run first inning.  Hacker and junior Isabella Antosiewicz recorded back-to-back base hits to start the frame.  Two batters later, freshman Tori Colagreco drove in both with a double to center field.  Colagreco later scored on a sacrifice fly by Peck.
 
* Penn College got on the board in the third when Payton Crawford drove in Carissa Lusk with a double to make the score 3-1. However, Abington answered in the top half of the fourth with a run to increase its lead back to three at 4-1. Scotese came through with a two-out run scoring hit.
 
* In the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats inched closer to the Abington lead with back-to-back extra base hits by Crawford and Taylor Brown to make the score 4-3.
 
* Penn College stole the lead in the bottom of the sixth with another two-run inning.  The Wildcats took advantage of a throwing error that scored the game-tying run.  Penn College took the lead at 5-4 when Tice scored after Carissa Lusk dropped down a bunt.
 
* In the seventh, the Nittany Lions had the game-tying run on second after Craig advanced into scoring position but Tice was able to retire the final batter of the game to collect her 20th victory of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Craig finished the game 3-for-4 with three base hits.
 
* Hacker also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
* Colagreco finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* For Penn College, Crawford finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Lusk went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th and 26th matchups between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2017 season. The Nittany Lions are now 4-22 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were making their 13th appearance in the United East as the team has qualified for the postseason every year since 2013.  Abington is now 13-22 in the conference tournament.
