Abington Defeats Mounties, 2-1

Cresson, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season after defeating Mount Aloysius College, 2-1, in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Kelly Field.

How It Happened
 
* Abington struck first and early to gather a 1-0 advantage by the ninth minute of action.  Junior Frankie Rafferty connected on his team-leading third goal of the season to give the Nittany Lions the game's first lead.
 
* The Mounties were forced to play a man down after a red card by Cole Taylor reduced the field to just nine field players. However, the home team managed to tie the game minutes later when Rasmus Andersson scored his third goal of the season to make the score 1-1.
 
* The score remained 1-1 until midway through the second half when the Nittany Lions struck again.  Sophomore Liame Attis scored his first goal of the season to give Abington a 2-1 advantage.  Rafferty along with junior Rael Halim were credit with assists on the play.
 
* The Mounties managed three shots down the stretch of the game, but all three shots were off target.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Abington outshot the Mounties by a 20-10 margin.  The 20 shots by the Nittany Lions marked a season-high, including eight on-goal tying their season-high mark.
 
* Freshmen goalkeepers Hector Ortiz and Angela D'Asti split time in net for the Nittany Lions.  Ortiz made two saves in the first half, while D'Asti made a stop in the second half.
 
* Rafferty tied his career-high with his third goal of the season in the opening half.  His second half assist marked the eighth of his career.
 
* The Mounties' Sam Denchfield made six save in net.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Mount Aloysius.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-0-0 versus the Mounties in the all-time series.  Abington won last year's matchup, 2-0, at Memorial Field.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Stockton University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
