Abington Downs Griffins, 3-1

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team won its fifth straight match after defeating Gwynedd Mercy University, 3-1, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at The Griffin Complex.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took the first two sets by the scores of 25-17 and 25-18 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.  In the opening set, Abington broke a 15-15 tie by scoring 10 of the final 12 points in the set, including six straight points to set up set-point at 24-16.  Freshman Kamilla Voinalovich had three kills during the final surge before an attack error by the Griffins capped the scoring in the set.
 
* In the second set the Nittany Lions never trailed after opening with a 4-0 run. Junior Fabiola Medina fueled the mini run with two aces.  Abington led by double-digits at 17-7 after a kill by senior Zayna Jamaladdin.  Later in the set, the Nittany Lions increased their lead to as many as 14 points when junior Ellie Van Otten recorded a kill to make the score 22-8. The Griffins made things interesting down the stretch using a 7-1 to make the score 24-18.  However, the deficit was too large to overcome as the Nittany Lions took the set, 25-18.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy extended the match with a 25-13 victory in the third set.  However, the Nittany Lions bounced back with a 25-17 set four win to take the match. The Nittany Lions took advantage of 13 attack errors by the Griffins in the set. Abington led by as many as nine points in the set after an attack error by the Griffins made the score 20-11.  Abington's final three points in the set came off miscues by the Griffins to cap the scoring.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Voinalovich recorded a match-high 11 kills to lead the Nittany Lions attack.
 
* Sophomore Danielle Langham finished with eight kills; one shy of her season-high. 
 
* Senior Ryenn Mamrosch paced the offense with 30 assists to go along with five digs and two aces. 
 
* Medina recorded a match-high 15 digs, while junior Maddie Welch finished with a season-high nine digs.
 
* Van Otten totaled five kills and a match-high three aces. She also had a match-high three block assists.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Kate Etter totaled 11 kills and seven digs, while Macie Ferla recorded 19 assists and nine digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 13th meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-5 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 as the Nittany Lions travel Wilkes-Barre, Pa. for a tri-match with the City College of New York and host Wilkes University.  The Nittany Lions will face CCNY at 1 p.m. before taking on Wilkes at 3 p.m.
