Abington Downs Highlanders, 4-0

Langhorne, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team improved to 2-0-0 in United East Conference (UEC) play after defeating Cairn University, 4-0, on the road on Tuesday night at the Stillman Athletic Complex.

How It Happened
 
* The Abington offense wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard as the Nittany Lions scored the game's first goal in the sixth minute of action.  Junior Frankie Rafferty connected on his team-leading fifth goal of the season after senior Hugh Nungessor assisted on the score. 
 
* The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions until the 38th minute.  Sophomore Anthony Abreu doubled the team's lead at 2-0 with his first goal of the season.
 
* Leading 2-0 entering the second half, Abington quickly scored to make it a 3-0 game.  Nungessor, who assisted on a score in the first half, knocked in a goal of his own in the 49th minute for his first goal of the season.  Junior Amerr Yagoub was credited with an assist off the corner kick attempt.
 
* Abington capped the scoring late in the second half to make the score 4-0.  Freshman Adiv Opinkaro tallied his first collegiate goal in the 74th minute with junior Mohamed Konneh assisting on the play.   
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Freshman Hector Ortiz made three saves in each half to finish the game with six stops.  Oritz preserved the shutout with his final save in the final minute of the game denying Cairn's Brock Burres.  The clean slate marked his second shutout of the season.
 
* Rafferty leads the team with five goals and ranks second among the conference leaders in that category.  His first half goal also marked his first career game-winning goal.
 
* Abington held a slight advantage on shots by a 14-10 margin.  The Nittany Lions finished the game with seven corner kick attempts to just two by the Highlanders.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-1-0 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 as the Nittany Lions welcome Penn State Brandywine to Memorial Field for a United East matchup.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
