Abington Falls to Brandywine in United East Action

Media, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) contest on the road against Penn State Brandywine by the score of 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Brandywine Commons Gym.

How It Happened
 
* After dropping the first set, Abington bounced back with a 25-17 victory in set two to tie the match at 1-1.  Abington jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never trailed in the set. The Nittany Lions led by as many as seven points late after a service ace by junior Ellie Van Otten made the score 21-14.  After a miscue led to a Brandywine point, Abington scored the final four points to close the set.  Sophomore Mari Banjoff capped the scoring with back-to-back aces.
 
* In the third set, Brandywine opened with a 5-1 run before Abington ripped off nine straight points to take a 10-5 lead in the set. The Nittany Lions took advantage of four Brandywine errors in the run and to go along with a pair of kills by both seniors Kayla Mason and Zayna Jamaladdin.  Later in the set a kill by Jamaladdin gave Abington a five-point lead again at 19-14.  However, Brandywine went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 20-19.  Both teams would exchange the next seven points in the set with another kill by Jamaladdin tying the score at 23-23.  Brandywine came through with the next two points to take the set, 25-23.
 
* Brandywine used an 11-3 run to open the fourth set to take an early eight-point lead. The home team Lions led by as many as 12 points in the set after a kill from Nia Moore made the score 21-9.  Despite the deficit Abington continued to battle and used an 8-1 run to come within five points of the lead at 22-17. However, Brandywine closed the match with the final three points to take the set, 25-17.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Jamaladdin led the match with a 12-kill performance.
 
* Mason finished with nine kills to go along with three block assists.
 
* Junior Fabiola Medina, who was named United East Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, totaled a match-high 20 digs.
 
* Senior Ryenn Mamrosch registered 33 assists while totaling 11 digs.
 
* Van Otten totaled eight kills and led the team with four block assists.
 
* Sophomore Danielle Langham also totaled eight kills in the match.
 
* For Brandywine, Hailey Piccirillo led the team with 11 kills to go along with 11 digs.  Bianca Vang finished with a team-high 13 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 5-3 versus Brandywine in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Cedar Crest College in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
