Box Score Abington, Pa. - Senior guard
Trish Watson led the Nittany Lions with 21 total points in a 79-69 loss earlier this afternoon against the Express of Wells College. Penn State Abington fought their way back into the game in the second half before falling behind again in the final ten minutes of play.
Wells (6-9, 5-2 NEAC) opened the game on an 8-0 run before Penn State could even get on the board. From that point on in the first half, the margin hovered between a 7-12 point deficit for the Nittany Lions. Finally, with under five minutes to go in the half, Penn State was able to cut the Express' lead to just five points several times. Then, a
Trish Watson layup with just 48 seconds left made the score 34-31 in favor of Wells. Although the Express were able to hit a three to take the lead back to six, a pair of free throws with one second left in the half made the halftime score just 37-33 in favore of Wells.
As the second half started, it was Penn State Abington (7-8, 5-3 NEAC) who went on the early run. Junior
Jaclyn Vandiver hit a three-pointer off an assist from
Trish Watson that cut the Express' lead to just one point. After a pair of missed jumpers from Wells, the Nittany Lions took their first lead of the game on a layup from sophomore
Jessica Schmidt. Wells jumped back ahead quickly, but then another three-pointer, this time from
Teharah Worrell, put Penn State Abington ahead by a score of 45-43. Once again, Wells fought right back and retook the lead. The Express managed to stretch their lead to as much as six points before the Nittany Lions made one final run.
Back-to-back three pointers from Watson tied the game at 57-57. Then, a terrific and-one layup from
Jessica Schmidt, plus the subsequent free-throw, gave the Nittany Lions their largest and, unfortunately, last lead of the game. The Express simply had too much left in the tank for Penn State Abington to handle, and by the time all was said and done, Wells had pulled away to a ten-point victory.
Nittany Lions sophomore
Jessica Schmidt added 19 points, while
Teharah Worrell added 12 and
Janay Winston chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Express were led by Ashley Roser, who had an incredible afternoon. The junior forward led all scorers with 26 points, and also pulled down a ridiculous 21 rebounds. Cassie Smythe and Holli Erkson added 17 points apiece to help lead Wells to victory. Penn State Abington has their next chance to break out of their current three-game losing streak this Wednesday night, when they take on Lancaster Bible College at home.
