Williamsport, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's soccer team closed out NEAC conference play Sunday with a 2-1 OT victory over the Penn College Wildcats.
Kayla Nolan (Abington, Pa.) would score her conference leading 17
th goal of the year just 15 minutes into the contest. With Penn College goalkeeper Colleen Bowes out of the box,
Megan Murphy (Warminster, Pa.) fed Nolan the ball and she deposited it into the back of the net for the 1-0 Abington lead.
Abington would take the 1-0 lead into half. The Blue and White outshot Penn College 11-7 in the first half.
Abington continued their strong play early on in the second half. Penn College would break through on the scoreboard in the 65
th minute. Off a set piece from Caitlin McCarthy, Valeria Passalacqua would put a shot behind Abington goalkeeper
Margaret Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) to knot the game up at one.
Nolan would have a glorious chance to give Abington the lead in the 69
th minute, but her shot rang off the crossbar. The game would head to overtime as neither team would score in the remaining minutes of the second half.
Nolan, who finished with a game-high four shots on goal, would have two wonderful chances to send the Nittany Lions home victorious, but Wildcat goalkeepr Colleen Bowes came up large.
In the 97
th minute,
Megan Murphy would score the golden goal for Abington after she received a nice pass from
Desirae Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa.), and tapped the ball past Bowes to give Abington the 2-1 OT victory.
Abington outshot Penn College 27-14 for the game.
Margaret Sheridan made five saves for the Nittany Lions.
With the win, Abington improves to 12-4 on the year (11-1 NEAC). They will return to action this next Saturday October 25, for their final regular season game of the year where they will hit the road to play Richard Stockton University.
