Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Tom Zulewski

Abington falls to Swarthmore, 5-0

HORSHAM, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team struggled Sunday afternoon and were defeated by the Swarthmore College Garnet 5-0.

Abington fell behind early just minutes into the game thanks to Swarthmore's Ellen Bachmannhuff's goal. Off a corner from Melissa Trofa, Bachmannhuff headed the ball past Margaret Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) for the 1-0 lead.

A little over four minutes later, Mele Johnson would make it 2-0 Swarthmore off a long shot from 20 yards out that got by Sheridan. Johnson would add her second goal of the game in the 21st minute. Johnson received a pass from Emma Sindelar and chipped the ball behind Sheridan for the 3-0 Garnet lead.

Johnson would score her third goal of the game in the 23rd minute with a long shot from 10 yards out that dropped over Sheridan and into the net. Swarthmore took a 4-0 lead into half.

Abington couldn't generate much offense in the second half, as they struggled to keep up with the precise passing and speed of Swarthmore. The Garnet's Katie Dougherty would tack on a goal in the 80th minute to give Swarthmore the commanding 5-0 lead.

Swarthmore outshot the Blue and White 22-5 for the game. Margaret Sheridan made seven saves for the Nittany Lions.

With the loss, Abington drops to 8-4 on the year (7-1, NEAC). They will return to action next Saturday October 11 when they travel to New York to square off against Keuka College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Please visit abingtonsports.com for all the latest news on your Penn State Abington athletic teams.
