Abington, Pa.- The Penn State Abington women's basketball team kicked off their 2014-15 season with a blowout 93-30 victory over Penn State Mont Alto Saturday afternoon.
Abington (1-0, 0-0 NEAC) shot 58.7% from the field for the day. They picked up 31 rebounds and shot 61.9% from beyond the arc. Abington jumped out to an early 28-6 lead just eight minutes into the game.
Stephanie Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) shot 8 of 14 from the field in the first half. In total, Keyes registered 23 points in the first half.
Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) was second among all Abington players in the first half with 11 points.
Mont Alto struggled to gain any offensive rhythm for the entire game. Abington would take a 51-12 lead into half.
The second half was much like the first half with Abington dominating in all facets of the game.
Stephanie Keyes led all scorers in the contest with 27 points and four assists. Elum tallied 22 points on the day and was just one assist shy of a double-double.
Jessica Schmidt (Elkins Park, Pa.) added 14 points and four rebounds, while
Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) provided a spark off the bench with 13 points and eight rebounds.
This is Abington's first home opener win since 2007, and the first time they have topped 90 points in over seven seasons.
Abington will return to action next weekend as they travel to Allentown, Pa. to participate in the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament hosted by Cedar Crest College. They play Cedar Crest at 3:00 p.m. next Saturday, November 22.
