Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Tom Zulewski

Nolan’s Four Goals Powers Abington Past Wilson

HORSHAM, Pa. - The game started off slow for the Penn State Abington women's soccer team, but once they got their legs under themselves they showed why they will be a force in the NEAC this season.

Brian Blesi's squad defeated the Wilson College Phoenix 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Hatboro-Horsham High School. Sophomore midfielder Kayla Nolan (Abington, Pa.) had herself quite an afternoon.

Nolan's first goal came in the 43rd minute on a great individual effort as she beat Wilson goalkeeper Teniera Prioleau for the 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting Wilson 14-1 for the first half, Abington was up only one goal after the first 45 minutes.

The second half was a much different story as the Nittany Lions would dominate in all aspects of the game.

Nolan would collect her second goal of the game in the 48th minute after receiving a beautiful pass from freshman forward Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.). Nolan beat her defender one-on-one, rolled around another defender, and slipped the ball past Prioleau on the right side for the 2-0 lead.

A little over four minutes later in the 52nd minute, Nolan would complete the natural hat trick thanks to a slick pass from freshman midfielder Michelle Latronica (Philadelphia, Pa.). Latronica fed a streaking Nolan who fired the ball past Prioleau for the 3-0 lead.

The aforementioned Latronica would get into the scoring action herself in the 55th minute. After a mad scramble in front of the Wilson net, Nolan fed the ball to Latronica who chipped it past Prioleau on the left side for the 4-0 lead.

At this point, Wilson was struggling to find any momentum whatsoever. Abington dominated the entire second half.

Nolan would score her fourth goal of the game in the 59th minute on a header thanks to a superb cross pass by Latronica from the left side. Nolan would finish the game with five points and eight shots total. Latronica registered four points and three shots herself.

Nolan's four goals tie an Abington women's soccer team record for most goals by an individual player in one game. She is now tied with Mallory Mugnier who scored four goals last September 17th in a game at Notre Dame (Maryland). Nolan leads the NEAC in goals with six total.

Junior midfielder Cindy Wade would tack on her second goal of the season in the 67th minute to give Abington the commanding 6-0 lead. In total, Abington outshot Wilson 28-1 for the game registering 20 shots on net. Freshman goalkeeper Margaret Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) now has three shutouts on the season.

With the win, the Nittany Lions move their record to 3-1 on the season (2-0 NEAC) and will look to improve that record this Wednesday when they travel to Reading, Pa. to square off with conference rival Penn State Berks.
